KDRV Posted: 02 Dec 2013 04:50 PM PST Snow Levels Down to Valley Floor Tonight Posted: 02 Dec 2013 08:22 AM PST WEATHER DISCUSSION Rain and snow is now moving in from the North this morning — this is the onset of an arctic front that will move through Southern Oregon today. Snow will be ongoing through this evening at Crater Lake and Diamond Lake. With cold air settling in behind this front, dropping snow levels will bring winter like weather to many of the passes by late afternoon. More widespread activity this morning will become more showery this afternoon and evening. Snow has been falling for the past two to three hours near Crater Lake — by this afternoon, snow levels will be down to roughly 3,000.’ For the Klamath Basin and the higher elevation passes, the rain will transition to snow as this cold air moves in. This will bring light snow showers to the roads through the afternoon. The I-5 passes could likely see light accumulations, between 1″ and 3.” A winter weather advisory is in place for the Cascades through 1pm this afternoon and a high wind warning for Eastern Klamath County and Lake County through 4pm. Peak winds will be primarily in the morning — wind gusts so far have been in the 20′s and low 30′s. They will gradually diminish through the afternoon. Post frontal showers will continue through the overnight hours, tapering off Tuesday morning. With snow levels at this point down to the Valley floor, showers will be in the form of snow over the Rogue Valley. In terms of accumulations, little to none is anticipated …grassy surfaces over West Side Valleys show the best chance for accumulation. The foothills may see 1″ before this system is all said and done. The bitter cold temperatures will follow beginning Tuesday, but more so into Wednesday & Thursday. Morning lows will be in the single digits over the Basin and in the higher elevations. Highs will struggle to warm into the 20′s and 30′s. Now a local woman is raising awareness about that same condition, and the equally rare surgery that could save her life. Grants Pass resident Kelly Koep first experienced symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, or EDS, at two years old. They’ve gotten worse ever since. Now at 27, she survives on handfuls of medicine a day, holding her head up with a neck brace. "The pain is one thing, but not being able to do what you want to do is scary," said Koep. About one in 5,000 people are estimated to have some form of EDS. Recently it achieved notoriety because its symptoms — frequently broken bones, bruising, and constant pain — are easily mistaken for abuse. Koep’s family found that out the hard way when she was child. "She jumped off her bed and she tumbled, and her elbow got dislocated," said Koep's mother Wendy. "They would not let me take her home, and they were going to call child services on me for child abuse." It's a reality Koep and her family will have to deal with for the rest of her life. But while there is no cure, there is hope. A handful of doctors can perform the fragile spinal surgery needed to ease Koep's symptoms. Hers is scheduled for Christmas Eve. "I should be able to walk. I should be able to just do basic activities," said Kelly. Koep says she likely will never be able to work or have kids. But for someone whose life has been confined to a chair, basic activities never sounded so sweet. "I can’t even express how it makes me feel just thinking about it," said Koep. "Just happy." Koep’s surgery will be in Maryland this month. After a long fight she was able to get it covered by insurance. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now | Winter-Like Conditions this Week Posted: 01 Dec 2013 07:08 PM PST WEATHER DISCUSSION A warm front is bringing increased clouds to the region and a few light showers to the coast and Cascades, but the heaviest precipitation will arrive right ahead of the cold front tomorrow. Steady rain will arrive at the coast mainly after midnight with inland areas holding off until early Monday morning. Snow levels will be fairly high to start the day out around 5,000 feet dropping to 2,500 to 4,500′ by the afternoon lower to 1,500 to 2,000 feet by Monday evening which means on your evening commute over Siskiyou or Sexton Summits you could be dealing with snow and reduced visibility. While the heaviest rain and snow will fall early Monday and and west of the Cascades, light showers will continue overnight Monday into early Tuesday with snow levels down to the valley floor. The favored spots of west side valleys including Ashland and the foothills could see up to an inch of snow by Tuesday morning with most areas seeing a trace to half an inch. Snow and wind may impact travel at times, especially over the passes and higher elevations. Check the tripcheck website before heading out and be prepared for winter driving conditions early this week. Snow total forecast: I-5 passes 1 to 3 inches Cascades 6 to 11 inches Valleys and east side trace to 1 inch After the arctic fronts pass through a very cold airmass will settle over the region with highs and lows 15 to 20 degrees below normal and lows will be closer to records than averages. The coldest days will be Wednesday through Friday when clear skies will allow drastic overnight cooling. The east side and mountains will bear the brunt of the cold air will lows near zero for the colder spots and wind chills below that. Prepare your home, pipes, pets, livestock and yourself before the cold air arrives! Freezing fog will re-develop by the end of the week and depending on how much fog and low clouds form will really determine how cold our overnight lows will get for the coast and west side valleys. The more fog and the quicker it forms will keep overnight lows in the 20s, for areas that don’t see fog temperatures will dip into the teens. Send in your storm reports and photos to me on Facebook and Twitter! Thanks for logging on and stay safe and warm this week! The Zion Lutheran Church has replaced its roof and stain glass windows, and repainted its interior and exterior. It has also rebuilt its large cross, which was also burned in the fire. The repairs cost the church nearly $200,000 dollars overall. However, most of those costs were covered by insurance. Throughout the past four months, church-goers have been meeting in a smaller part of the church as the rebuilding process took place. Service was held for the first time in the remodeled sanctuary on Thanksgiving. "In the end this has turned out very well," said congregation member Nathan Willard. "The community and the congregation here has responded well, and we have a great new sanctuary and a new roof and this really has turned out to be a blessing for this congregation." Medford Police and Fire ruled the church fire as arson. Police say two unknown men through something at the cross, possibly a Molotov cocktail. The church says the public has also worked hard and contributed to the rebuilding process, and they are very appreciative of all of the community support. Words of gratitude from Pastor Cyril l Hunkler after someone set the church's cross on fire in July which then spread into the chapel. Five months later the church is still standing strong. "It almost made me cry because i have been here many times and I hated to see it broken and dusty but its cleaner then before." Parishioners say that even though whoever did this to their church is still out there in an odd way the fire brought a lot of good. "They say no bad thing lacks some kind of a blessing so we have been crammed together in our fireside room and meeting there nobody left nobody gave up we just hung in and kept going." It's the community support that Nancy Swan says made Sunday's re dedication ceremony possible. "We are just so blessed to be back in our sanctuary after our terrible fire in July and it just means that we can look at our window about marching to Zion since we are Zion and just share all of our happiness with all of our friends in the community." Including Vera Sherman who's been with the church since 1919. "I'm just so grateful to be here." And so are the other members of the congregation. | Medford Lights Up The Holiday Tree Posted: 01 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST The holiday celebrations began Saturday evening at the Pear Blossom Park in downtown Medford. Jefferson Declaration Posted: 02 Dec 2013 04:50 PM PST Jefferson ballot measure being considered Posted: 01 Dec 2013 07:41 PM PST By RICH GREENE-DN Staff Writer Updated: 11/30/2013 07:42:19 AM PST Red Bluff Daily News Tehama County voters may sooner than later get to voice their opinions on whether the county should join the State of Jefferson movement. The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to discuss adding an advisory measure on the June 2014 ballot when it meets at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at the Board Chambers, 727 Oak St. Should the Tehama County Board of Supervisors adopt a Declaration of Support for the proposed separation from the State of California and formation of a 51st state, the advisory measure would ask voters. The ballot measure would allow the board to hear from the public regarding the withdrawal movement before proceeding with extensive analysis that county staff has said could be lengthy and expensive. State of Jefferson supporters presented their case at a special board meeting Nov. 13, asking the supervisors to pass a Declaration of Support. Withdrawal proponents said they were looking to have the Declaration passed by at least 10 counties before proceeding with the extensive analysis. The advisory ballot measure in Tehama County would cost about $12,360. Proponents point to a similar June 1992 advisory vote when 31 counties considered a measure asking whether California should be split into separate states. Twenty-six counties supported the measure, with 75.6 percent of voters in California voting yes. ——— Rich Greene can be reached at 527-2151, Ext. 109 or by email at rgreene@redbluffdailynews.c om. | |
