In the first game, the Lions went out to a quick 5-0 lead. The Raiders responded with three points in a row making the score 5-3. A bit later, Emma Morris served up two aces to extend Etna’s lead to 9-5. With the match tied, the Lions went on a 14 point scoring streak for a 25-11 win. Game-two started with Burney serving but it was quickly turned over to the Lions. Elida Pelayo had a pair of aces to give Etna a 4-0 lead. Morris added another ace making the score 6-1. Megan Menne had a couple of kills and an ace extending the lead to 14-4. Burney rallied and narrowed the gap to seven points, 16-9. Another ace for Morris and a combined six kills from Katie Schott (2), Molly Schaefer (2), Izzy Duerr (1), and Morris (1) put the Lions up 24-16. A final ace by Morris ended the second match 25-16. The whole night Etna came out at the start of each game with a lead, and the third game wasn't any different. With a kill by Duerr, the Lions had a 3-0 lead. A kill for Daniela Ramos, an ace for Pelayo, and a kill for Schott helped get Etna a 10-2 lead. Another kill for Morris, a kill for Schaefer and a block for Menne, along with several aces by Victoria Gamache ensured the final game victory, 25-5. Jackson County Commissioner John Rachor is an experienced pilot and has a hangar on about two acres of land just outside the airport.
Since he no longer has a helicopter and only has an airplane, he has no access to the airport’s runways. Now, Rachor is giving the land to the county in exchange for a 25 year lease with the first 13 years free because of the investment given to the county. “I do retain ownership of the building, so this will allow me to bring my airplane back over here, I’m now renting a hangar from the airport, and so this will allow me to put my airplane in here or rent it to somebody else,” said Commissioner Rachor. The other Jackson County Commissioners approved the move after the deal was struck through a third party facilitator. Commissioner Rachor removed himself from the vote due to the direct conflict of interest. All areas will dry out by the early afternoon so trick-or-treating or any other Halloween activities will be dry albeit cool. Friday will return sunshine to the area as high pressure returns briefly and will be the warmest day of the week. The report by Morgan Stanley shows a global shortage of about 300 million cases a year. The shortage could be linked to a decrease in production in Europe over the past two years due to poor weather conditions for vineyards. The report shows global production dropped by more than 5% last year, mostly due to bad weather in France and Argentina. Americans consumes 12% of the world’s wine, but produces just 8%. In the Rogue Valley, local wine makers say the wine industry is booming and demand is high. They say the majority of local wine is sold on the local market and a smaller portion is exported. Wine makers say the weather in Oregon is ideal for vineyards and has led to a steady production over the past several years. Poor weather conditions in Europe and other markets in the world have led to a decrease in supply, and with demand not going away, wine makers say this could be an opportunity to expand exports. “In our case, what we see happening is if the world market is low, we may have more options or it's easier to export, especially in China," explained Jean Michel Jussiaume at Del Rio Vineyards. Because of the aging process, and the back to back years of bad weather in France, the real effects of the decrease in production could be yet to come. Del Rio Vineyards plans on expanding and growing more vines in the near future to keep up with the demand. His letter was published in the Portland newspaper, The Oregonian. In it, he shares what he saw and heard at last week's game during his first time as a spectator in the stands. He states in the letter, "I love the Ducks. I hate Duck fans." It goes on to talk about the fans around him that he says used foul language and continually criticized everyone from players to coaches. Fans had mixed reactions to the letter. Some say they agree with the anonymous writer, and some say fans can't be generalized. "At first it's cool, but then it gets belligerent and obnoxious," said Springfield resident Billy Gass. "We're all supposed to be there cheering them on, not fighting each other. So for those people, yeah, I agree with what he said. For those screaming for the Ducks, I hope more of those people show up," said Springfield resident Damon Gathright. Fans say they would like to see more people toned down the negativity towards the home team and just have fun. The letter was published Tuesday by The Oregonian's sports columnist John Canzano. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now | | Fatal Hit-and-Run in Cave Junction Posted: 30 Oct 2013 05:16 PM PDT  CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. — Family and friends say they will find the person responsible for hitting and killing two Cave Junction residents early Wednesday morning. Police say they are looking for a beige, 1980′s-style Toyota pickup truck with a camper shell, and possible front end damage.
Other people in Cave Junction that NewsWatch12 spoke with say they also saw this truck speeding through a residential area, roughly a half an hour before the deadly hit-and-run. It all started when 21-year-old Jarred Quinn Houston pulled over to the side of the road due to mechanical problems. He was confronted by Robert Calvin, who was walking along side of the road. There are still a lot of questions as to what happened from there, but police say the two men ended up fighting in the middle of the road. This is when the suspect in the Toyota truck hit both men and kept driving. "If they would’ve stopped…these people in the roadway more than likely no criminal charges would’ve been filed, but now they’ve killed two people and left the scene of a crime, which is a crime in itself," said Oregon State Police Sgt. Jeff Proulx. Police say they do have leads on the investigation, and if and when the suspect is caught, criminal charges will be filed.  This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now | | Insurance Costs Rise Under ACA Posted: 30 Oct 2013 04:48 PM PDT GRANTS PASS, Ore. — People in Southern Oregon have begun receiving letters saying the cost of their insurance plans will go up because of the Affordable Care Act. In some cases the out of pocket cost is jumping hundreds of dollars per month. People NewsWatch12 spoke to on Wednesday said they were surprised to find out that their existing insurance plan will be changed as a result of the Affordable Care Act. One woman in Grants Pass said her monthly payments are increasing by $200. She said a letter from her insurance carrier said there will be changes to conform insurance plants to the new health care laws. Her cheapest plan available is still $460 per month. She said she’s still exploring her options to bring that cost down. "I was kind of excited at first that everybody was going to be getting insurance, but obviously now, it’s painful," said Jane Fish, whose insurance rates are going up. Those current plans do not meet minimum standards laid out in the affordable care act. Independent insurance agents say individual carriers are raising prices because the plans will have more coverage compared to existing plans. The catch is, many people have not been able to compare their plans with better prices, because of continued issued with the HealthCare.gov and Cover Oregon websites.  This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now | | Illegal Marijuana Grows Cleaned Up Posted: 30 Oct 2013 04:17 PM PDT NEAR ASHLAND, Ore. — Illegal marijuana grows across Jackson County are eradicated every year by the sheriff’s office, but the trash those growers leave behind still remain at the sites. The pile of trash at one near Ashland site is just the beginning…there’s about half a dozen more grow sites left to clean up. The grow site that crews cleaned up on Wednesday was active in 2010. Over 4,200 marijuana plants were pulled from this site. The growers left behind everything they ate, used, and set up to produce the illegal plants. For three years, all of that trash has been sitting in the forest, but through a $125,000 grant by the U.S. Forest Service, the Jackson County Sheriff Office’s hired crew members to starting cleaning it up. "People hunt here, people are going to run into the garbage. It could be dangerous, someone trips. The animals get into it. I said, there's some cattle that are grazing up behind me, and they’ve gotten into the hose," explained Jackson County Lt. Matt Thomson. Investigators arrested 23 people in connection with the grow site where crews cleaned up on Wednesday. The sheriff's office was able to slow down the number of illegal grows in the next few years because of those arrests.  | | Raffle to Help Abused Children Posted: 30 Oct 2013 02:43 PM PDT  MEDFORD, Ore. — One organization helping abused and neglected children needs your help to continue its services in Jackson County. Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, is selling 5,000 raffle tickets to raise money.
The prize is a 1933 Willy’s Coupe. Each ticket costs $10, or eleven tickets for $100. The winner will be announced at Harry and David this Saturday at 3 p.m. All of the money from the raffle will go to help pay for training recruitment and other services at CASA. "So, the donation of this hot rod by David Kiff at Pacific Tool and Gauge was a lifesaver for us. It’ll help us sustain our advocacy for children who have been abused or neglected," explained CASA Executive Director Jennifer Mylenek. There are still plenty tickets left. It was a night Rhino Prince will never forget.
He says "if you can imagine the worst thing that you've ever seen, this is it. It's as senseless tragedy."
Prince and his best friend 21-year-old Jarred Houston were in his SUV broken down on the side of Highway 199 early Wednesday morning about two miles South of Cave Junction.
41-year-old Robert Calvin was walking in the area with his wife. That's when some sort of fight broke out between the two men.
"They were supposedly in the southbound lanes and that's when an unknown vehicle that was southbound hit both the men killing them instantly on the scene," says Sgt. Jeff Proulx of the Oregon State Police.
Prince say "The car just took off, didn't hesitate to stop, just kept going like nothing had happened."
Sgt. Proulx says that because the men were in the middle of the roadway, there more than likely wouldn't have been any criminal charges had they stopped.
He says, "Now they've killed two people and left the scene of the crime, that's a crime in it of itself. So ya there will be criminal charges against this person."
Criminal charges may be filed but for family of Jarred, it will never bring him back.
Daniel his older brother says "it's my little brother ya know I cant imagine him going before me."
They send a message to the driver that hit and killed their brother and friend.
Prince says "I'd like to see that person turn themselves in, if you're a human being how can you live with yourself."
Daniel says "there's not going to be any closure until you come forward."
The suspect vehicle is described as a light colored, beige or tan 1980s style single cab Toyota Pickup with a matching color canopy, and will have front end damage.

For many folks in SeaTac, Washington it does and it could become a reality if the campaign succeeds.
The proposal comes on the heels of the rallies that broke out this past summer where fast food workers demanded more pay. Now, the minimum wage debate has gained steam across the U.S.
In Southern Oregon, Michael Hays works at a coffee stand making minimum wage at $8.95. He's like many people who work a minimum wage gig and sometimes struggle to make ends meet.
"I know if I was getting $15 an hour I would be really happy," said Hays.
Raising the minimum wage to $15 is exactly what some people are trying to do up in SeaTac, Washington and it looks like it's gaining traction. Both mayoral candidates there are reportedly in support of the rate hike.
While John Kinard, a business professor at Southern Oregon University does not believe the proposal will pass in Washington, he says if a similar one was unveiled in Oregon, small businesses would be negatively impacted.
"If you were to go from $10-$15 in one swoop [...] I think it would have a significant impact on small business," said John Kinard, a Business Professor at Southern Oregon University.
A Boost to Minimum Wage Would Hit Small Businesses
Ann Wilton, owner of Renaissance Rose in Ashland agrees. Even at nine-dollars an hour she struggles to keep up. She said the outlook would be even more bleak if the minimum wage skyrocketed.
"We couldn't handle it at 15. We just couldn't handle it. It would put us out of business," said Wilton.
"In the realities of this particular economy, when each year we're seeing our gross sales go down, I don't see how we can have our minimum wage go up," she continued.
According to Professor Kinard at SOU, the cost would ultimately be paid for by the consumer.
"If you're a restaurant, you're not just going to absorb that kind of wage increase. You're going to pass that along to your customers," he said.
Oregon Businesses Better Off Than In Other States
But Kinard also says if there were an increase in the minimum wage in Oregon, businesses in the state wouldn't be hit too hard when compared with businesses in other states where minimum wages also went up.
"Oregon has the second lowest business tax rate in the country next to Delaware," he said.
What About Income Inequality?
While Oregon is in pretty good shape when it comes to taxes imposed on businesses, in regard to another issue closely related to minimum wage is income inequality. In that sphere, Kindard said the state could do better to reduce the gap.
"I think [income inequality] is a real thing where the middle class is being sort of eviscerated in this whole process."
According to Professor Kinard, if we calculated inflation rates from 1965, Oregonians should be making closer to $17-$18 an hour to be keeping up and unfortunately it doesn't look like that will be happening anytime soon.
He said workers who get paid at minimum levels probably should be making more.
"I think they deserve more than what we're currently paying in the way of minimum wage."
"It's hard for a single person, family member or parent to live on $30,000 a year. That's barely above the poverty line [...] and that's the minimum wage," said Kinard.
Meantime, for Hays who works hard for his money...
"God I would love for it to go up," said Hays.
A little more cash would mean more money that he could spend in the local economy.
Kinard says Oregon has the second highest minimum wage in the country. Washington has the highest. By 2016 California plans to increase their minimum wage to $10 an hour. The Federal rate is $7.25 per hour.
Back in 2002 Oregon voters decided to support a measure that would allow the minimum wage to be adjusted every year for inflation. For the first time, it's all getting cleaned up, (so to speak.) We hiked to the site of a marijuana grow where crews are hard at work.
It's the wee hours of the morning. Jackson County Sheriff's and Search and Rescue teams pack up, heading deep into the mountains south of Ashland. Their purpose, to clean up garbage left at a marijuana grow site busted in 2010. "All the sites we've come to in the past, everything been left in the woods," says Lt. Matt Thomson with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
For three years garbage strewn over miles has sat here. "The worst are the newer grows, where some of these guys are defecating in the water sources so then we're cleaning up the pipe. Sometimes you can smell it," comments one of the workers from Search and Rescue.
The mess is posing risks for animals and the environment. "There were some cattle that were grazing up stream who got into last week," says Thomson.
So why couldn't crews clean before, the problem... lack of funding, but this year that's all changing. The U.S. Forest Service and Sheriff's Department received a $125 thousand dollar grant specifically for restoring old grow sites.
Now crews are picking up miles of hose, propane, and personal items... backpacking it out of dense, steep terrain. "That's going to start the natural re-growth of everything and fix erosion problems," says Thomson. This time, he says the growth will be what nature intended to be here.  |  |
