dWeb.News Article from Yoni Heisler dWeb.News Tech News

Lurking behind the scenes on the iPhone are a handful of hidden apps that you probably had no idea existed. And while you might be inclined to believe that any app Apple doesn’t make conspicuous probably lacks any meaningful utility, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

We’ve highlighted a few of these hidden iPhone apps in the past, but Gadget Hacks recently compiled them into an informative and easy-to-digest list. I think it’s fair to say that even seasoned iPhone users will be somewhat surprised at a few of the apps Apple has, for whatever reason, made somewhat tricky to find.

Can You Future Proof an SEO Strategy?

Posted: 31 May 2021 12:40 PM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Nate Nead dWeb.News Tech News

Search engine optimization (SEO) has evolved to become a favorite strategy of entrepreneurs, bloggers, and content creators everywhere – in part because of its versatility and simplicity. With a handful of changes to your website and a commitment to creating quality content, you can begin your journey to ranking higher in search engines (and ultimately getting more traffic to your site).

But there's a problem that most optimizers run into sooner or later. Eventually, Google releases an update that shakes things up or fundamentally changes the landscape of search engine algorithms. And one day, Google may no longer be the top competitor – or we may see a total reinvention of how search works.

Is there a way for you to future proof your SEO strategy, so you're not subject to the whims of these technological changes?

The How and Why of Google Updates

First, let's talk about the how and why of Google updates. What are these cryptic and ubiquitous shakeups to the most popular search engine algorithm on the planet?

Google's main motivation is to make money. It can't make money unless people are using it frequently. And people won't use it frequently unless it serves their needs as fully and accurately as possible. In other words, for Google to remain profitable, it needs to give people results that they're actually looking for.

As far as Google is concerned, that means giving people relevant and trustworthy results, with as few instances of spam and annoyances as possible.

Search optimizers have historically tried to "game the system," finding loopholes, workarounds, and gimmicks that could help them rank. For example, in the early days of SEO, a common strategy was to "hide" keywords and phrases into the background of your site, allowing you to optimize for certain phrases without writing any actual content containing them.

Google put a quick stop to "black hat" manipulation tactics like these, releasing updates that fought against spam, better evaluated content quality, and better evaluated the value of links. Over the years, we've also seen the introduction of updates that make Google smarter or more capable in various ways. For example, the Hummingbird update of 2013 introduced semantic search functionality, allowing Google to interpret the intent of a user's query, rather than relying purely on exact match keywords for its algorithmic evaluations.

When these algorithm updates arrived, each one shook up the world of SEO. Webmasters saw their websites either surge or plunge in rankings, and optimizers everywhere had to scramble to change up their tactics to please the new algorithm.

So what's the next Google update going to be like

That's the million dollar question if you want to future proof your SEO strategy. If you could somehow predict Google's updates for the next decade (or longer), you'd be in a prime position to cultivate and follow an SEO strategy with no chance of imploding in the near term.

Unfortunately, it's hard to say where Google is going from here. Broadly speaking, we can conclude that Google will always act in the best interests of its users, it will likely attempt to adapt to new technologies quickly and decisively, and it will prioritize valuable content over spam and low-quality content no matter what. New updates will just reflect these motivations in a new light.

The End of the Search Era

There's also the possibility of this era of search, as we know it, ending for good. That could mean the rise of a fundamentally new kind of search engine that renders Google's familiar search platform obsolete. It could mean the rise of a technology that makes it nearly impossible to search in a traditional format. Or it could mean a radical evolution of Google and other search engines to a form that's practically unrecognizable.

In any case, if we undergo a shift like this, it will likely require a ground-up reworking of SEO overall. If old algorithms are no longer relevant, we'll need to devise new strategies to account for the new major players.

However, it's unlikely that we'll see such a radical shift – at least in the next decade or two. Technological progress isn't as disruptive or as volatile as it was even a few decades ago. These days, information technology seems to creep forward in a series of many small changes. If Google is on course to evolve into an unrecognizable form, it will likely do so across a series of gradual steps, giving us plenty of time to adapt our strategies to its new form.

Key Ways to Future Proof Your SEO Strategy

With all these considerations in mind, there are a handful of important ways you can "future proof" your SEO strategy, or at least come close.

Develop content for people, not algorithms. One of the core components of any SEO strategy is content. If you want to rise in SERP rankings, you need to develop strong content for your site, write new blog posts on a regular basis, and even develop good offsite content so you can build better inbound links. Too often, optimizers develop content specifically for algorithms; they try to find a perfect balance of keywords to include and choose topics that strike a perfect balance of being relevant yet non-competitive. Instead, you'll do better to future proof your SEO strategy by writing for people – not algorithms. Developing content that people truly value and enjoy will keep you relevant no matter what changes search algorithms go through.
Stay evergreen when you can. When possible, keep your content evergreen. It's perfectly fine (and often outright advantageous) to cover current events and temporary developments, but the bulk of your content should remain relevant for as long as possible. It will help you resist volatile shifts in consumer priorities.
Prioritize quality over quantity. It's tempting to write as much as you can and build as many links as you can to boost your website's performance, but it's always better to prioritize quality over quantity. This approach will keep your website thriving even as algorithms begin to change; if you write content with the intentions of barely crossing the "minimum quality" threshold and that threshold changes, your site could take a massive hit.
Hedge your bets with multiple domains. It's also a good idea to hedge your bets with multiple domains. Consider managing multiple domains for your business or building multiple websites and using different types of strategies for each. That way, if one domain ever takes a big hit or faces an increased risk, you'll have other domains to fall back on.
Diversify your portfolio. Similarly, it's wise to "diversify" your SEO portfolio. Write lots of different types of content. Get links from many different sources. If your strategy is diverse and distributed, you'll be much less likely to face a steep penalty out of nowhere.
Stay on your toes and watch the news. Remember that Google's search algorithm is changing almost constantly. If you're caught off guard by a new update, or if you're late hearing the news about the latest update, it will make it nearly impossible to remain adaptable. Keep reading SEO blogs and be ready to change if and when necessary to adapt to the times.
Invest in more than just SEO. As a proponent of SEO, I hate to say this, but link building for SEO may not be a totally viable strategy forever – or it might decline in value in the future. Invest in more digital marketing strategies to make your business better-rounded.

It's impossible to guard your SEO strategy against any possible future development, in large part because it's impossible to predict the future. In 20 years, our current search engines may seem pitifully obsolete – or they may merely advance to a slightly more robust form. No matter what, if you prioritize the fundamentals and keep your strategy in balance, you'll stand to win in the long term.

Intel’s new chips will power the next-gen M1 MacBook Air rivals

Posted: 31 May 2021 12:40 PM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Chris Smith dWeb.News Tech News

Intel announced a few weeks ago the brand new 11th-gen Intel Core H-series processors (Tiger Lake-H) that will power plenty of laptop models this year. Various notebook vendors have already announced new designs based on the new Core H-Series chips, which will compete directly against the MacBooks featuring Apple's M-series processors.

Intel announced at Computex 2021 on Monday two additions to the list of 11th-gen Intel chips, the new U-series processors that will power "thin-and-light" Windows laptops this year. These devices will go head to head against the M1 MacBook Air, which is the thinnest and lightest MacBook there is — Apple is already rumored to launch a redesigned Air model this year, featuring a brand new M-series processor.

Unredacted documents reveal how Google tricked users into sharing private data

Posted: 31 May 2021 11:41 AM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Chris Smith dWeb.News Tech News

Google has been adding various privacy improvements to its services and apps in the past few years, but it wasn't solely out of its own volition. Google's own privacy-infringing problems forced the company to reconsider some of its practices. Then there’s Apple's massive interest in security and privacy that forced Google to come up with matching features in Android and its apps.

But Google apparently never wanted users to have that much freedom when it comes to certain aspects of their privacy. Newly unredacted documents in a lawsuit against Google revealed that the Search giant made it nearly impossible for users to keep location data private from Google. Location is one of the most sensitive privacy topics for Google, as the company was recently caught collecting user data from people who thought their privacy settings would not allow it.

Seattle-area lighting manufacturer forms new business to build COVID-zapping UV products

Posted: 31 May 2021 09:41 AM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Bryan Corliss dWeb.News Tech News

A Seattle-area lighting manufacturer has entered the market with a line of UV lighting products that it says can kill viruses and keep people safe — just as schools and businesses prepare to welcome students and workers in a post-pandemic world.

"We're quoting a lot of commercial opportunities," said Jim Mischel, CEO of Safeology.

Everett, Wash.-based Safeology spun out of Electric Mirror, which manufactures luxury lighted mirrors and medicine cabinets for the hospitality industry. 90% of the hotels in Las Vegas have installed Electric Mirrors products, said Teresa Wenta, the company's global executive director of marketing.

The company's website describes how in January 2020, as the first U.S. COVID cases were being diagnosed in Everett, Jim Mischel started thinking about ways to protect his newborn daughter and the community from getting sick.

About the same time, his brother, Aaron — an executive vice president of sales for the company — was traveling on business and seeing how COVID was starting to spread. When he returned to Everett, "my brother marched into my office and said 'You gotta do this,'" Jim Mischell recalled. In March 2020, they formed Safeology as a separately branded division of Electric Mirrors.

The company's background in the lighting business made it logical for Safeology to use UV-C lighting to fight viruses.

"It was a pretty easy transition," Aaron Mischel said. "It's just a lighting product."

Safeology's UV-C lights in an office setting. (Safeology Photo)

UV-C lighting has been used for decades to reduce the spread of various microbes, particularly in medical settings. Testing has shown that it destroys the outer protein layer of human coronaviruses, which renders them inactive.

One test found it to be more than 99% effective in specifically stopping the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. Airlines already are using UV-C lighting devices to disinfect passenger cabins between flights, with Honeywell and Boeing among the manufacturers selling products into that market.

However, UV-C light also can be harmful to humans, causing severe flash sunburns and sometimes eye damage. Not all UV-C products on the market are safe, Jim Mischel said.

"There are a lot of gimmicks out there," he said, "or products that are truly dangerous for people."

One of Safeology's first steps was to form a scientific advisory team, which includes Dr. George Diaz, who diagnosed and treated the first known COVID patient in the U.S. The experts helped them figure out how long the SARS-CoV-2 virus needs to be exposed to UV-C light to be effective.

"We knew the technology," Aaron Mischel said. "But it's nice to have the real science behind the technology."

Safeology has pivoted with its product offerings as more has become known about the virus.

Originally, the company offered a UV-C tower that could be used in an empty room to sterilize it. That was because it was thought the primary way the virus spread was on surfaces.

As scientific understanding advanced, and it became clear that COVID was an airborne virus, the company developed a portable air purification system that sucks room air into a chamber where it is blasted by UV-C light, then filtered through both HEPA and carbon filters before the air is returned to the room.

This not only removes COVID from the room, but any other virus, bacteria or allergen, Aaron Mischel said. It also is quiet enough to run while students or office workers are in the room.

The portable filtration system can be controlled through a smartphone app. "It's the first project I know of anywhere where commercial mobile air purification has been combined with IoT (Internet of Things) infrastructure," Jim Mischel said.

The company's most recent product is an upper-room system that attaches to the ceiling and sends beams of UV-C light parallel to the floor, creating a virus-free zone above the heads of the people in the room. As air circulates in the room, the light disinfects it.

"No matter what seasonal virus comes, you could be at work while your light overhead is cleaning the air," Aaron Mischel said.

The Mischels say they've had "a great initial start" with orders for their products, but are "having to really educate people" on how the technology works.

Even as more Americans get vaccinated, there seems to be demand for this kind of a product, Jim Mischel said. "People are afraid, and the vaccine's not foolproof."

The real cost of electronic health records

Posted: 31 May 2021 08:45 AM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Jason Shafrin dWeb.News Tech News

Electronic health records (EHR) are moderns marvels. The ability to communicate and safely store patient information has the potential to greatly improve quality of care.

Implementing EHR, however, is not costless. There is of course the cost of the EHR system itself and the cost of training staff on how to use the EHR system. patient. But one underappreciated aspect of EHR is that they require physical systems to work. And the cost of that physical infrastructure may often be overlooked. As the Federal News Network reports:

VA's previous physical infrastructure estimates were unreliable, the department's inspector general said earlier this week, raising questions about the overall costs of the EHR modernization effort.
VA is updating the electrical work, cabling, heating, cooling and ventilation to prepare for the Cerner Millennium suite at its medical facilities. The Veterans Health Administration estimated the costs of performing that work on two previous occasions — once in June 2019, when it projected the upgrades at $2.7 billion. VHA offered a second estimate later that year in November, when it said physical infrastructure upgrades would cost $1.1 billion.
But the actual costs for EHR physical infrastructure upgrades are likely more, potentially $3.1-to-$3.7 billion, according to the VA inspector general.

About 40 percent of these costs are just due to necessary fiber optic cable upgrades to insure fast internet speeds.

This doesn't mean the EHR aren't useful or aren't worth the money. However, it is important the government and non-governmental facilities incorporate the full cost of EHR implementation.
