BUSINESS:

SANTA BARBARA, CA, January 27, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ — Marquis Who’s Who, the world’s premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Richard Flacks with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Flacks, a highly accomplished listee, is recognized for his achievements and leadership qualities as well as the successes and credentials he has achieved in his field. Individuals profiled in Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes are chosen based on current reference value. During the selection process, factors such as position, notable accomplishments, visibility and prominence in a particular field are all considered.

Richard Flacks, professor of sociology at University of California Santa Barbara, retired in 2006. Dr. Flacks began his career as an assistant professor in the department of sociology at the University of Chicago from 1964 to 1969. He moved to the University of California Santa Barbara, where he served as an associate professor from 1969 to 1975, and professor of sociology from 1975 to 2006. He chaired that department from 1975 to 1980.

Dr. Flacks was an undergraduate at Brooklyn College, a part of the City University of New York system, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. He was fortunate to have been a student at Brooklyn College of Dr. Harold Proshansky whose classes in sociology attracted Dr. Flacks. He entered the graduate program in social psychology at the University of Michigan in 1958 and was fortunate to be able to work with professor Theodore Newcomb, one of the pre-eminent figures in the field.

Dr. Flacks was part of the multi-year research team led by Newcomb that examined the impact of college on students’ values and choices. This project resulted in a book, co-authored by Dr. Flacks: “Persistence and Change: A College and its Students After 25 Years”.

Dr. Flacks carried out extensive research on politics and student culture. A major project on the social psychology of student activism pioneered research on student protests in the ’60s, and his article reporting that research, “The Liberated Generation: An Exploration of the Roots of Student Protest,” was one of the most cited research papers in sociology in that decade. Dr. Flacks’ book on the ’60s youth revolt, “Youth and Social Change,” was published in 1971.

Dr. Flacks combines his work as a sociologist with strong involvement in social action. He was a founding member, in 1962, of the Students for a Democratic Society, a leading organization of the ’60s New Left, helped write its manifestoes and served on its national council. Beginning in the mid-70s, he contributed a number of books and articles aimed at systematic understanding of social movements and political activism. “Making History: The American Left and the American Mind” was published in 1988. He co-authored “Beyond the Barricades: The Liberated Generation Grows Up,” published in 1989.

His lifelong passion for music as a form of protest led to a co-authored book, “Playing for Change”: Music and Musicians at the Service of Social Movements. It was published in 2011.. His wife and he co-authored a memoir called “Making History/Making Blintzes” about how two red diaper babies found each other and discovered America. It was published in 2018.. Dr. Flacks has edited or co-edited several readers and research compilations: “Conformity, Resistance and Self-Determination: The Individual and Authority” in 1973, “Cultural Politics and Social Movements” in 1996 and “The Port Huron Statement: Sources and Legacies of the New Left’s Founding Document” in 2015.

Dr. Flacks is affiliated with many organizations related to his expertise. His active involvement with the American Sociological Association included election as the chair of the political sociology section from 1990 to 1991, a council member from 2001 to 2002 and service on a number of committees. Dr. Flacks was vice-chair and acting chair of University of California Santa Barbara’s academic senate. He also served as chair of both the committee on student affairs, and the board on admissions, relations, and relations with Schools of California. He was a fellow of the Center for the Study of Higher Education where he started the ongoing survey of student life, the University of California Undergraduate Experience Study.

During his more than 50 years as a resident of Santa Barbara, Dr. Flacks has become well-known as a community leader. He was a co-chairman of the Santa Barbara County Action Network and was a board member for a variety of community organizations including the Fund for Santa Barbara, CAUSE Acton Fund, and Fund for Santa Barbara.

His remarkable career has seen Dr. Flacks receive numerous accolades as a testimony to his extraordinary achievements. The University of California Santa Barbara awarded him the Flacks Internship for Associated Students 2000. On his retirement in 2006, the social science division created the Dick Flacks Democracy Fund for graduate research in sociology. Multiple editions of Who’s Who in America included Dr. Flacks.

Dr. Flacks was married for 63 years to Miriam “Mickey” Flacks who passed away in April 2020. Charles Wright Flacks was their son, Marc Ajay Flacks was their daughter, and they had six grandchildren.

KDI’s Foundation Gives Back to the Community in a Big Way

KDI’s Foundation Gives Back to the Community in a Big Way

BUSINESS:

ASTON, Pa.Feb. 1, 2022PRLog — KDI Cares Foundation, the non-profit arm of KDI Office Technology, continued its mission of giving back to the community in which it serves during the fall and winter of 2021. This past year, the organization and KDI employees focused their efforts on fighting breast cancer through its annual Pink Ball Golf Outing, spreading holiday cheer to area youth via the 4th Annual Jaws Holiday Bike Drive, and supporting a veteran by adopting his family through the Stars and Stripes, Bars and Pipes organization.

” We are thrilled to be able give back to the community, especially after last year. According to Rick Salcedo (CEO/President of KDI Office Technology), many organizations received fewer donations because of the pandemic. “I cannot thank my team enough for their generosity. We ask them year after year for their financial and time donations. It is amazing what we can accomplish together. Their kindness and generosity are immeasurable. “

Pink Ball Golf Tournament

In the fall, KDI Office Technology, through their non-profit, KDI Cares Foundation (https://www.kdi-inc.com/kdi-cares-foundation/), hosted its third Annual Pink Ball Golf Tournament at Ron Jaworski’s Ramblewood Country Club in Mt. Laurel, NJ. Between sponsors, donors, and golfers, $70,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Kimberly S. Reed was the keynote speaker. She is a cancer survivor and author “Optimists Always Win.” She spoke about how to embrace the power of optimism, and not let adversity get in your way.

“The American Cancer Society was incredibly grateful for KDI’s Flagship partnership in our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Program in Greater Philadelphia, both in 2021, and over the past 4 years,” stated Alex Basseches, Senior Corporate Relation Manager, American Cancer Society, Inc., Northeast Region. “During that span they’ve contributed more than $230,000 and their generosity has helped ACS make an impact in the fight against cancer. It’s partners like KDI who enable us to invest more than $69 million in breast cancer research, educate people with information to navigate their cancer journey, advocate for increased access to care like screening services, and expand patient services. The Pink Ball golf outing is in memory of Rick Salcedo's brother-in law, Tom Germanovich. This annual event is also intended to raise awareness about male breast cancer and encourage women and men to have their annual check-ups. KDI Cares Foundation is in the process of planning its fourth Annual Pink Ball Golf Outing which will be held on September 22, 2022.

4th Annual Jaws Holiday Bike Drive

In December, KDI Cares Foundation supported the local youth through Ron Jaworski’s 4th Annual Jaws Holiday Bike Drive as a $2500 Silver Bell Sponsor. Through this sponsorship designation, 25 bikes, 25 locks, and 25 helmets were donated. Over the past four years, Jaws Youth Playbook has given away over 1,000 bikes to underserved children during the holiday season.

In a letter to Rick Salcedo (https://www.kdi-inc.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/jaws-2…), Ron Jaworski showed his appreciation for KDI and his involvement. Jaworski expressed gratitude for the generous support. “During these challenging times of Covid-19, my foundation, Jaws Youth Playbook, was able to continue our tradition of giving bikes to hundreds of underserved youth in the spirit of the holiday season.” Every year, the organization chooses a new Philadelphia community. This year brought smiles and joy to the Community Center at Visitation. My foundation and the youth of Kensington, as well as the youth who were impacted by it, are deeply grateful for your donation. “

Giving Back to a Family In Need

For six years, KDI Office Technology has teamed up with its employees to support a local family in need over the holidays. They worked with Stars and stripes Bars and Pipes in Holmes, PA, which is a non-profit that focuses on veterans and first responders. A local 15-year Army veteran named Pete and his three boys were selected for KDI’s charitable giving endeavor. After suffering a series of bad luck, the veteran and his family lost everything except their clothes. Pete’s story touched KDI. $3000 was raised through the company’s annual holiday party via highly coveted raffle baskets and 50/50 sales. Also, winter jackets and clothes were collected and given.

“From one of his children being a victim of a violent crime, to Pete being in terrible motorcycle accident and out of work during a long recovery, to their home being flooded by Hurricane Ida, and the entire family also being infected with Covid-19, the heartache was more than any one family should ever have to bear,” said Crystal Manning, who sits on the KDI Cares Foundation board. Manning said that the club members were more than touched to be able help one of their own. KDI received a certificate as a token of appreciation for their support in adopting a veteran’s family and paying them a visit during the holiday season.

MIPAD connects Black History Month in USA with Black History Celebrations Worldwide

MIPAD connects Black History Month in USA with Black History Celebrations Worldwide

Black History can be celebrated every month around the globe.

WASHINGTONFeb. 1, 2022PRLog — The Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD), a global civil society organization recognizing people of African Descent in support of the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent, is working to connect Black History Month in the United States to global celebrations of Black History. This directly addresses the problem that Black History Month is celebrated in the United States during the shortest month.

“When we look at the world from a global perspective, we see that every month there is someone learning about and celebrating Black History. Not just February,” stated Kamil Olufowobi, CEO, MIPAD .. “Black History Month” in the United States is an exciting time. However, our history cannot be contained within a single month. Our brothers and sisters from the United States are invited to participate in other global celebrations for Black History throughout the year. “

What began as a week-long celebration by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History(r)), was officially made Black History Month in 1986 through a Joint Resolution of Congress and a subsequent Presidential Proclamation. The February birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln were the focus of the celebration.

Olufowobi continued, “Carter G. Woodson, ASALH(r) and many others fought hard for official recognition of Black History Month in the United States. Every year, however, the question remains: “Why is Black History the shortest month in the year?” Let’s celebrate every day of February. Let’s celebrate Black History in every month of the calendar year, as well as the Global African Diaspora. “

Global Black History Celebrations:

January 24th

– UNESCO World Day for African and Afrodescendant Culture

February – United States, Canada, Germany

March – International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade

April – Honduras

May – Colombia, Panama, African Union (Africa Day)

June – Peru, China (Beijing Africa Week), United Kingdom (Windrush Day), United States (Juneteenth)

July – Australia

August – Costa Rica

September – International Decade for People of African Descent at United Nations General Assembly

October – United Kingdom, Netherlands

November – Argentina, Brazil

December – Kwanza

In the month of February, MIPAD will share thoughts on Black History Month from members of the African Diaspora around the world. MIPAD will continue to share Black History celebrations from around the globe with special touchpoints to the United States. These opportunities will be shared via MIPAD Blog, social channels and media partners. MIPAD will be sharing with UNGA attendees how Black History is celebrated worldwide during the 2022 UN General Assembly (UNGA).

International Decade for People of African Descent

Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 68/237 (http://undocs.org/A/RES/68/237) and to be observed from 2015 to 2024, the International Decade for People of African Descent (https://www.un.org/en/observances/decade-people-african-d…) celebrates the important contributions of people of African descent worldwide in line with the Sustainable Development Goals spearheaded by the United Nations.

MIPAD was designated by the United Nations to celebrate and recognize people of African descent during the International Decade for People of African Descent. MIPAD recognizes African-Americans who excel in the public and private sector each year. The past honorees have come from all walks of media, including government, sport, tech, non profit, and business. This week-long conference, which coincides with UNGA, sees MIPAD Honorees meet for training and networking.

Research pioneering non-invasive cancer detection

Research pioneering non-invasive cancer detection

Although cancer is the leading cause of death in the world, there are no approved clinical tests that can be used to screen for more people. The sooner tumors are identified, the better the chance of a cure.

The scientists created a classification model that can distinguish between patients with solid tumors and healthy subjects. It was able to recognize DNA mutations and epigenetic alterations like DNA methylation and miRNAs.

Most researchers tend to focus on one biomarker and one type of cancer at a given time. This study used plasma samples from healthy subjects and people with nine types of cancer to analyze genetics and epigenetics. The combination of three analytes provided the highest accuracy and sensitivity, and was more accurate than the biopsy models based on mutations, cfDNA methylation or miRNAs.

The researchers are planning to expand their prospective cohort in order to validate this test’s clinical utility and determine if the tissue of origin can be identified. The ultimate goal of the researchers is to create a simple, accurate and minimally invasive pancancer screening test that could be used routinely at annual checkups. This would increase early detection in high-risk patients.
