ASHLAND, OR

As the undefeated Ashland Grizzlies warm up for a game against Eagle Point..

They're playing on a field unlike their own with artificial turf.
Coaches say Ashland is the only school in it's division without it.

"Right now we have six home games a year thats about all its used for."

But now the Grizz will likely compete on their own new turf field.
Thanks to former quarter back turned major league  baseball player Jeremy Guthrie.

"I know Jeremy and I just thought what a cool guy to do that for Ashland and to make that sizable donation so that they could get the turf."

The Kansas City Royals pitcher is donating $500,000 to Ashland High for the multi-use field and Coach Hall says his players need it.

"It's as safe as it is on natural grass and in some cases even safer then natural..our field is unique its been around for a while its got a huge crown on it its very uneven and its very tough."

Football dad Greg White says changing to a turf field has been in the works for six years, but the economy put plans on hold. Now thanks to an alumn quarter back his quarter back is closer to playing on a field he's as proud of as the team itself.

"If they put the paw in the middle of the field and but some red en-zones there we'll be ready to roll."

Families In Need Taking a Hit Come Nov. 1st

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 05:50 PM PDT

Medford

In just a week, people who need help putting food on the table will get less of it on November 1st.

That's because a recession-time boost to Oregon's food stamp program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP, is running out.

The news is adding insult to injury for many families struggling to get by.

"It's been really difficult," said Tifini Wright, a single working mom supporting two young children.

"I'm really scared when they say they're going to start cutting things [...] I use all of the money that I receive for my SNAP benefits. So when they make those cuts, it's felt. It reverberates out," said Wright.

Those cuts to Oregon's food stamp program are coming up on November 1st.

"People are going to see [...] $36 per family decrease and that can mean quite a lot to a family that's struggling to make ends meet for the whole month," said Philip Yates, the Nutritional Programs Director at ACCESS.

It's not good when in July, ACCESS saw their busiest month ever.

"We hit over 4000 families in one month, which we've never done before," said Yates.

"Poverty levels in Oregon are at 17.5% compared to the national average of about 15%," he continued.

If more people come to access as a result of the cuts to SNAP benefits, Yates said he doesn't think ACCESS will be able to adequately provide for everyone, but they will still try.

According to Yates, it's fortunate that the holidays are around the corner, since it's the time of year people typically give the most. The real struggle may come in January or February 2014, when the holiday giving dwindles.

For family advocates struggling to find more resources to fill the void, it's not good news.

"As a family advocate, our job is to help these families find resources. They're already utilizing the resources that are available, and then to have a chunk of their food stamp money taken away is just...it's just devastating," said Ginny Miller, Family Advocate for Southern Oregon Headstart.

"These families are already utilizing services that are there, and now they have even less, so they're going to need more. Where is that going to come from?" asked Miller.

Contrary to popular belief, Miller says most families in need are working families. She said many of them feel as if they're being penalized for working hard and trying to make the best of their situations. According to Miller, if a person has a job where they earn above the poverty threshold, they won't qualify for other types of assistance, even if the amount of money the make isn't enough to cover necessities like childcare, rent or food.

"It's like a 'catch-22' for the families that are really struggling to get ahead," said Miller.

Yates also added that while many people believe families in need are taking advantage of the system, it's just not true.

"Maybe 4-5% of the people are manipulating the system," he said.
Most people really do need the help.

Meanwhile, for Tifini Wright, the single mom we spoke with who runs a daycare for other struggling single moms, said she's planning to rely a bit more on her church and food banks in the area.

Two Killed In Klamath County Fire

The remains of two women have been recovered from a home near Bonanza that was destroyed by fire Thursday.

Josh Hunt watched helplessly as a home occupied by his mother and his aunt burned.  Hunt is trying to pick up the pieces today...

"I'm doing a little bit better.  Trying to be strong for my family...just making sure we all move on, but it is hard.  Just take one step, baby step at a time."

The remains of 62 year old Patricia Ann Hunt and 67 year old Jeanne Florence Russell were recovered from the home.

Deputy State Fire Marshal Greg Davis says the fire was sparked by a deadly combination...

"Person was smoking, while in bed, while on oxygen.  The fire traveled across the oxygen line to another room, blocking the escape route."

Davis adds that a cluttered home hampered initial rescue efforts...

"It looks like there was quite a bit of items stored in the home.  The main entrance into the home was blocked with a couch, so they had only one entrance."

Fire investigators were on scene this morning, documenting the site of the fatal fire.

And Josh Hunt was remembering his loved ones...

"They were just loving and kindly.  That's all they wanted out of life, was everybody just to love them, and care for them."

Vagrancy Down through Team of Officers

NITGRANTS PASS, Ore. — The rented jail beds through the Josephine County jail are helping a special team of officers in Grants Pass reduce vagrancy problems.

The Grants Pass Department of Public Safety says its Nuisance Intervention Team or NIT is one of the most successful ideas its launched for the city. The team of police officers go out each week to target the problematic areas in the city like Baker Park and the downtown area.

Since launching the special team, officers have cited 75 people, handed out 45 warnings and made 9 arrests.

Jail Beds Filling Up to Maximum Limit

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 11:01 PM PDT

Jail BedsGRANTS PASS, Ore. — Police are filling up Josephine County jail beds reaching the contract’s maximum limit almost every day.

The city is paying a million dollars to rent up to 30 jail beds through the county.  Since then, the community and police are seeing a big difference. The city is using between 26 and 30 jail beds every day. Police say being able to house criminals in jail, instead of the former cite and release method  has empowered the community and their department.

Officers are noticing lawbreakers are becoming less aggressive knowing there are now consequences.   But the contract is only for this year. The city doesn’t have enough funds to continue paying the county.  Police are hoping by the time June comes around, when the contract ends, the county will have a solution to fix its budget and open more beds.

The end of the contract is not the only thing the city and police are concerned about this year. Come November, residents will decide whether to continue a tax levy supporting the police and fire department.

Officer-Involved Shooting Investigated

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 06:53 PM PDT

WEED, Calif. – The Siskiyou County District Attorney’s Office is investigating an attack against a police officer that ended in the fatal shooting of a suspect.

Weed police responded to a small arson fire at the Greyhound Bus Depot around 8:00 Thursday night. According to District Attorney Kirk Andrus, the offer asked the man who started the fire to put it out but he got enraged and attacked. The officer even used his Taser on the man, but to no effect.

"He had incapacitated him for just a very short amount of time, maybe five seconds," said Andrus. "And that is extremely unusual."

After getting up, the man reportedly tried to steal the police car. When the officer fought him out of the driver’s seat, he stole the officer's Taser that had been dropped in the scuffle and ran away on foot into the nearby woods. He then escaped police for an hour and a half.

"They ended up setting up a perimeter around where he was, and then two officers came in to make that contact, sending a dog in as well," said Andrus. "And again, he reacted with violence. It was just a short time after that he ended up getting shot."

The district attorney’s office says the suspect is from outside the area, so is not well known to law enforcement. An autopsy Friday will reveal whether drugs were involved.

The DA's office is also looking into whether the use of force was justified. That investigation is expected to take weeks or months.

Expect quite breezy conditions on the east side with sustained winds of 20mph, and a big drop in temperatures next week as a large upper low slides into the region.

Temperatures will drop about 10 to 20 degrees from what we’ve been seeing in the afternoons and quite cold overnight lows in the teens on the east side and near freezing for west side valleys. There is a slight chance for rain and snow showers Monday on the east side with snow levels dropping to 4,000 feet. Stay tuned to Newswatch12 for the latest!

Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Weed

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 11:45 AM PDT

WEED INVESTIGATION2WEED, Cal. — Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Deputies and the District Attorney’s office, California Highway Patrol, the Department of Justice Forensic Investigators and the Weed Police Department all responded to the Greyhound Bus station in Weed for an officer-involved shooting.

We have a reporter at the scene and will continue to bring you the most up-to-date information as it becomes available. Currently, we know at about 9:15 p.m. last night, Weed Police Department and Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office personnel encountered a male adult near Shastina Drive in Weed who was wanted for an unprovoked and vicious attack against a Weed Police officer earlier in the evening.

The earlier encounter between the male and Police officer happened at the Greyhound Bus station on S. Weed Boulevard. The suspect was contacted after he committed an act of arson by starting a fire on the wood porch directly in front of the bus station. When the Police made contact, the suspect refused to extinguish the fire and aggressively and violently resisted arrest, despite an attempt from the officer to stop the suspect with a taser. The struggle continued until the suspect jumped into the officer’s patrol car and attempted to steal the vehicle. The Police officer then used pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the suspect and again attempted to arrest him.

The male suspect violently resisted, exited the patrol car and fled the scene on foot after grabbing the officer’s taser when it dropped to the ground in the struggle. A search by the Weed Police, Siskiyou Sheriff’s office and California Highway Patrol immediately sprung into action. Local officers and deputies found the suspect near the freeway overpass. After attempting to subdue him with a law enforcement canine unit, the suspect continued to violently resist arrest and tried to  injure the canine, the officer and deputy discharged their firearms and the suspect was struck. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The identification of the suspect has been withheld, pending notification of his next-of-kin. This is still under investigation.
