Opinion: We will not let them die in vain by Jack Layton

Posted: 16 Oct 2013 09:52 PM PDT

When I go through Fort Jones at night and see Old Glory flying high, it kinda gets a lump in my throat. I look at her and think what it has cost to keep this country free.
Park at the library and see the names of those who gave the supreme sacrifice, those who died so that this country might be free. I remember my uncle, who died in the Marines at Cape Glouster; I barely knew him as I was a young boy. There are hundreds of thousands who died fighting for freedom.
Then my mind jumps to those who want to take those freedoms away, walk all over the Constitution of the United States. Right now they are after our Second Amendment, tooth and toenail. The people we have to be afraid of is not so much those criminals in power, but the people who gave them the power to take our liberties away.
We cannot and will not let those brave soldiers die in vain. Like Patrick Henry said, “Give me liberty or give me death."

Yreka —
Tonight's meeting of the Yreka Planning Commission signals what may be the arrival of a Starbucks in Yreka, as the commission decides whether or not it will approve a Sign Use Permit exemption for the business.
According to the attending documents, the permit application requests permission to install a 45-foot-high sign with the Starbucks logo at 1805 Fort Jones Road under an exception to city codes regulating the allowable square footage for a pole sign and the content of a sign that is not pertinent to the land on which it is located.
