Jefferson Declaration A Special Blaze Report Series: Why do so Many Conservatives Want out of Their States?

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 11:12 AM PDT

Jefferson Declaration

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 11:17 PM PDT

I no longer believe that "conservative" is the correct descriptive word for those of us, from the rural areas, seeking remedies in our government. The real problem is lack of representation. Each person deserves to be heard and receive respect for offering truth and facts. Our complaint is that our few elected officials are drowned-out by the urbanite masses and then out-voted. So what should we call ourselves? – Administrator Liz Bowen

Oct. 25, 2013 12:00pm

By

Call state and county realignment efforts in Colorado, California, and Maryland burgeoning rebellions against leftist-driven big government imposition.

Conservative and rural Coloradans, for example, are so excised by the high-handedness of urban liberals who dominate the Centennial State's government that 11 northeastern counties have declared a desire to form their own state.  \Votes are scheduled in those counties on Nov. 5.

There's a fundamental break between urban liberals and rural Coloradans over morals, values and faith

Share:

Meanwhile, five counties in Maryland's panhandle want out. Two counties in northern California want no part of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento, where liberal Democrats have an unending lock on state government.

The clash, as Pat Buchanan pointed out in a commentary for WND, is economic. Colorado's urban liberals – many of them affluent, liberal California migrants and young "blues" – are imposing laws that injure agriculture and energy development and production in much of rural Colorado.

Former rural Texas congressman Charles Stenholm, a self-identified "Blue Dog Democrat," who prior to the 2010 election tsunami that hit his party, wrote for "The Hill":

This has certainly been the case with the [federal] government's energy and agriculture policies. They may be red meat to the liberal base but they are crippling rural America and commercial agriculture.

And that's true on state levels as well. In California, for instance, coastal liberals have crippled Central Valley agriculture through stringent environmental regulations, including water use.

Businesses – mostly small – are bearing the brunt of Denver-based liberals' green policies. Rural Coloradans' jobs and incomes are threatened. Putting food on the table, a roof overhead, and clothes on backs are basics that anyone would fight over.

But there's more than economics involved. There's a fundamental break between urban liberals and rural Coloradans over mores, values, and faith. Imposition government is a total war, of sorts, on ancestral America, and those Coloradans, Californians, and Marylanders who hold fast to traditional concepts of family, community, and faith.

From the "Huffington Post":

But perhaps the most telling numbers pertained to the breakdown of the respondents' politics: 40 percent of liberals claim they have no religion, compared to just 9 percent of conservatives.

Thus, we can correctly conclude that rural America is by far more conservative than urban America.

But how could realignment take place?  \As a commenter from our first article in this series correctly stated, Article Four of the Constitution provides the framework for creating new political entities: "New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress."

Therefore, let's first look at the places that are already taking action to split.  Since it is unlikely the Congress would currently approve the formation of new states, particularly since such an action would add more conservative U.S. Senators, the option of merging the territory with other existing pro-freedom states may be more plausible.

In Colorado, the counties discussing separation all are contiguous to Wyoming, and could conceivably petition to be included in that state.  Having the least number of inhabitants (576,412 according to the latest US Census figures) of any American state, Wyomingites should find annexing the counties to be a positive addition for both their state and the new inhabitants.

Turning to California, the northern counties that desire to found the state of Jefferson may not be able to do so, but proposing they join most of what is eastern Oregon's 2nd Congressional District for purposes of merging with Idaho could provide this region a workable solution.

WEATHER DISCUSSION

A ridge of high pressure is now building into the Northwest. This is going to bring sunny skies to the region both today and tomorrow, but cool temperatures. A cold front will move by to our north on Halloween and this will bring cloud cover, but showers should stay from the Umpqua Divide and north. Trick or Treat will be dry, but chilly! Bundle the kids up.

Computer models continue to show a significant rain and snow event moving into Southern Oregon for the weekend. This will bring valley rain and mountain snow. However, with snow levels dropping to roughly 3,000 the foothills will pick up snow through the passing of this system. Showers will linger into Sunday before another disturbance moves in Monday bringing more wet weather.

Weather Discussion

A large upper low will shift south overnight bringing just a few light showers to the east side of southern Oregon and northern California, mainly for Lake, Modoc and east Siskiyou county. Tomorrow will bring a cold morning across the region with areas of frost at the coast and temperatures near to below freezing for west side valleys and lows in the teens and low 2os for the east side. A Frost Advisory has been issued for the coast and a Freeze Warning for west side valleys including the cities of Medford, Grants Pass, Ashland and Cave Junction. Temperatures Wednesday morning could be just as cold but the afternoon will be slightly warmer.

Wednesday will bring increasing clouds and a chance for coast and Cascade light showers overnight Wednesday into Halloween morning. Trick-or-treating still looks to be dry although quite chilly!

The end of the work week will be slightly warmer with more sunshine Friday before the next cold front arrives Saturday returning rain, snow and wind back to the region with another drop in temperatures. Snow levels will drop to 3,000 feet Saturday bringing snow back to the Cascade passes…more so than what we saw today.

Thanks for logging on and have a great evening!

Medical Marijuana Growers Targeted

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 06:44 PM PDT

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Medical marijuana growers are becoming targets for thieves.

Harvest season for marijuana is over. Right now, for most growers, they are preparing their crop for distribution through drying and packaging. Oregon State Police say thieves are taking note and targeting medical marijuana grow sites.

The most recent incident was over the weekend. Two Cave Junction residents reported two armed men in masks and camouflage clothing forced their way inside their home on Takilma Road. According to OSP, the two men claimed to be law enforcement, telling the two residents to get face down on the floor.

The two stole around 6 pounds of processed marijuana, several firearms and a car. OSP has confirmed the home is a registered medical marijuana grow site. In the last few months, troopers are noticing more grow sites being hit by thieves.

"Like any other medical marijuana grow, in any criminal activity, they target people who have the product they want or the items they want. Whether it be a bank having cash and they do a bank robbery or a medical marijuana grow," explained Oregon State Police Sgt. Jeff Proulx.

One of the victims tried to chase down the two men, but were unable to catch them. Oregon State Police has handed the case over to the Rogue Area Drug Enforcement team; that agency will be responsible for any follow-ups and further investigation.

New Grant Aims to Improve Learning

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 06:43 PM PDT

Rp MeetingEAGLE POINT, Ore. — After receiving a grant from the state, the first collaborative meeting between school District 9 teachers and administrators wrapped up on Monday, all with the focus on making educators even more effective.

A $30,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Education has brought five teachers, five administrators and others from the Eagle Point School District together to bounce ideas off of each other on how to improve the school district.

Four areas in particular, career pathways, professional development, evaluation systems and compensation models, are the target of the collaborative meetings. Those areas all center on those within the school district and not specific to the students, but those with the new project say it all improves student’s learning.

“We're really focusing on student achievement and improvement and this grant, specifically, allows us to streamline that process and improve on things that we've already been doing," said Janelle Reed, a science teacher and project director.

This grant is only the first step in a process that could award upwards of a million dollars over three years to help execute the blueprint formed during these meetings. The collaborative meetings will continue into the spring when a blueprint can be formed and the school district can apply for more funds to execute that design.

Delays Plague Cover Oregon Website

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 06:15 PM PDT

MEDFORD, Ore. — A month after the Cover Oregon website rolled out, users still can’t enroll online. This comes as health exchanges across the country battle glitches and delays.

Oregon Health Exchange is one of the private insurers in the area now certified as Cover Oregon agents. Their office has been entirely refitted with Cover Oregon computer booths and offices to accommodate people looking to sign up. After spending fifteen to twenty thousand dollars on the effort, however, they still haven’t enrolled a single customer online.

Cover Oregon had originally planned on having enrollment live on October 1st. First that changed to mid-October, and now they say they hope it will be ready by the end of the month.

Customers can see if they’re eligible for subsidies and browse options online, but the only way they can actually enroll is by filling out a nine to fifteen page paper application.

Oregon Health Exchange agent David Cuttrell says that’s holding back signups. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking before coverage begins on January 1st.

"The real problem is that every day that goes by we’re getting closer and closer to that January first deadline. And that’s kind of causing a few grey hairs on the old goatee," said Cuttrell.

Cover Oregon says they accounted for a slow start. They say they originally planning on insuring 217,000 people in the first year, but may revise that number.

Project Update on Mt. Sexton

MT. SEXTON, Ore. — With winter weather just around the corner, contractors on Interstate 5 north of Grants Pass are rushing to get as much work done as possible now.

One problem as cropped up that they may not have expected: a slide has developed near the summit where the hillside was blasted away to make a wider lane to accommodate truck traffic. ODOT officials say repairs are on the way.

“Now it’s more exposed and it’s having some effect on the dirt, on the hillside. So some of it came loose in this area. The slide area and so over the next couple weeks we’re going to do repair on that. Possible put in some embankment and fix it up," said ODOT Spokesman Dan Latham.

That would probably involve placing large boulders on the seepage site to better hold it in place. Latham says the project which was bid as a two year project will be about 90% done when work stops for the season.

Final paving and other work will be completed next spring or summer.

City Holds Joint Meeting with County

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 05:35 PM PDT

GP MeetingGRANTS PASS, Ore. — Several ideas and solutions came about from a joint meeting between Grants Pass City Council and Josephine County Commissioners on Monday.

City council discussed one project to build a main thru-way to take pressure off of Williams Highway. Council members wanted to move forward but needed commissioners to approve it first. That area is under the county’s jurisdiction.

City and county leaders decided that thru-way was crucial to build in the county and plan to meet again with o-dot members into the discussion.

"I don’t know what to do about this today. I’m not expecting you guys to just pass it around and put your mark on there. I don’t think we can do that. I understand your side of it," said Grants Pass City Councilor.

By signing an agreement with the city, the county has the option to pull out of that project. Ultimately, the City of Grants Pass would get stuck with the bill to pay for the costs like the design plan.

“Wild” Affecting Ashland Plaza Business

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 05:28 PM PDT

Ashland PlazaASHLAND, Ore. — Businesses in Ashland’s Plaza are giving mixed reviews after feeling the effects of the movie “Wild.”

The movie filmed in the Plaza for a day, shutting down the area for the most part. Crews were also there beforehand setting up and preparing scenes.

Louie’s Restaurant says their business grew by 75% over the year before, but other businesses say they lost nearly an entire day’s worth of customers.

"We got to meet a lot of new friends. And business was way up from the same day last year," said Louie’s Restaurant Manager, Tom Dubois.

Some of the plaza businesses, including Umi Sushi, are now requesting reimbursement from the film company. That is apparently something that is budgeted in to the filming process, but representatives of the film did not immediately respond to confirm.
