Siskiyou Youth Sports News Posted: 27 Oct 2013 09:56 AM PDT Tigers a win away from outright California-North 8-man football league title Posted: 26 Oct 2013 11:00 PM PDT Photos by Chelsea Helms The Dunsmuir Tigers defeated the Hayfork Timberjacks on Friday night in Hayfork, 64-34. It was not, however, as easy as the final score might suggest. The Timberjacks led Dunsmuir 8-7 at the end of the first quarter, and the squads were knotted at 20-20 going into the intermission. Dunsmuir pulled away in the third quarter, out scoring the Timberjacks 24-6 to take a 44-26 lead into the final frame. The fourth quarter also belonged to the Tigers as they scored 20 points to Hayfork’s eight points, for a final of 64-34. Tiger Chase Sordahl left vapor trails as he rushed for 349 yards and 5 touchdowns, as well as 4 two-point conversion. Dayton Pepperdine scored 3 TDs, and had 156 yards rushing. Randy Hix led Dunsmuir in total tackles with 18. Also in double figures for take downs were Joey Campbell (14) and CJ Palmer (13). Palmer led in solo tackles with 12. Pepperdine, Palmer and Shawn Adams each had an interception, with Adams returning his 80 yards for a TD. Pepperdine recovered a fumble. Dunsmuir (5-0, 9-0) finishes out its regular season at home against Happy Camp (1-5, 2-7) on Friday. Happy Camp defeated Elk Creek last Friday, 48-26. Keep in mind that these may not be entirely accurate because of the results not being accurate on MaxPreps or other problems. Division-II – top 8 make playoffs Yreka (5-2) is ranked 8th behind Lassen (4-4) and in front of Anderson (1-7). West Valley (7-1) has the top spot. Division-III – top 8 make playoffs Trinity (6-2) is ranked 6th behind Pierce (5-3), who they beat on Friday. Trinity leads Winters (5-3). Mt. Shasta (3-5) is ranked 10th behind East Nicolaus (2-6) and ahead of U-Prep (2-6). Colusa (6-2) is ranked 1st. Division-IV – top 8 make playoffs Ok, this comes with a caveat. It appears that there are several problems with the win-loss records that were used for this ranking. We are checking into it and will make corrections if need be when we find out the story. Weed (6-2) is ranked 3rd. Etna is 4th (6-2…we think it should be 7-2). Fall River is ranked 6th, but it shows its SCL record as 1-1, and its overall record as 4-4. We think it should be 2-0 and 5-3. If we are correct, it would move Fall River to at least 5th and possibly 4th. Biggs at 8-0 is on top of the rankings. *-man playoff rankings are done differently, and the seedings will be released next Saturday. Share on Facebook | Lions run over Raiders, 31-0 Posted: 26 Oct 2013 08:06 PM PDT The Etna Lions celebrated Homecoming 2013 by running over the Burney Raiders at Duncan Field on Friday night. The opening drive set the tone. Etna went to work at their own 16-yard-line and drove 84 yards in a little under four minutes for a touchdown. All 84 yards came on the ground. Wyatt Finley got the party started with a 44-yard sprint. Finley would rack up over 200 yards in the game. Zac Hansen followed with an 11-yard romp. On a 2nd and seven at the Burney 21, Harrison Hogun ripped off the Lions third double-digit run of the drive, 13 yards to the 8-yard-line. Three plays later, Hogun went in from two yards out. The PAT was missed, leaving Etna with a 6-0 advantage. The Etna offense went to work on its next possession right at midfield. After a 5-yard penalty, Finley took off on a 27-yard jaunt to the Raider 28. Thirteen yards from Hansen gave Etna a first down at the 15. Finley finished off the drive on the next play. The 2-point try failed, but it was Etna 12 – Burney 0 with 5:31 to go in the first quarter. After recovering a Burney fumble, the Lions took over on their own 6-yard-line with under a minute to go in the half. Hansen gained 14 yards on the first play of the drive. A holding penalty negated a long run on the next play, but Hogun gained 14 yards to bring Etna to the 28, with just over 18 ticks left on the clock. About 10 seconds later, the Lions were celebrating a 72-yard TD pass play from Hogun to Lukas Nadig. The 2-point conversion…ah, no. Burney got the ball first in the second half. The Raiders started on their 25, but went nowhere and punted. Etna set up shop at its own 42. An 8-yard run and then a 20-yard run by Marquis Pitts gave the Lions a first down at the Burney 30. A yellow hanky moved the Lions back five yards. Pitts ran for 12 yards to the 23. Then, the Lions revved up the Diesel—Jimmy Hausauer. The Diesel rambled eight yards to the 15, and then found pay dirt on the next play, and it was 24-0 at the 7:33 mark of the third quarter. The 2-point try…still no. Burney moved to inside the Etna 5-yard-line late in the fourth quarter, but a sack by Andrew Stone thwarted that threat. The Lions took over on downs at their own 15-yard-line. Not long after, Finley went 70 yards for the game’s final TD. Finley also added the extra point kick, ending the conversion drought for the Lions, and making it 31-0. Etna has a bye this week and will be awaiting the outcome of the Weed at Fall River game next Friday. A Fall River win would all but assure a Shasta Cascade League title, as the Bulldogs would only have win-less Burney left in the regular season finale. A Weed win would put the Cougars in first place, and set up the possibility of a 3-way championship. Etna goes to Weed for the last game of the SCL season. The North Section released the initial 2013 playoff points standings on Saturday. From the SCL, Weed is ranked 3rd, Etna 4th, Fall River 6th, Modoc 8th and Burney 9th. Biggs (8-0) and Maxwell (6-2) hold down the number one and two spots. However, unless something strange is going on, the info used for the rankings is incorrect. Fall River is shown as being 1-1 in league and in third place. Etna is shown as being 6-2 overall instead of 7-2. Also, because Fall River is shown as 1-1, Etna is shown as being in 2nd place instead of 3rd place. Shasta Cascade League standings Weed 2-0 (6-2) Fall River 2-0 (5-3) Etna 2-1 (7-2) Burney 0-2 (0-8) Modoc 0-2 (2-7) Share on Facebook | Fall Soccer playoff brackets set Posted: 26 Oct 2013 07:55 PM PDT The North Section announced the 2013 Fall Soccer playoff brackets on Saturday. Mt. Shasta (15-0-1) is the top seed and has a first-round bye. Tulelake (12-2-2) is the two-seed and will host 7-seed Etna (5-10-3). The third seed went to Paradise Adventist (12-5), who will host number-six Weed (9-7-3) Butte Valley (8-4-2) captured the final home playoff spot at number-4, and will host five-seed Redding Christian (15-5-1). All first-round matches are on Tuesday, October 29, with a scheduled start time of 3:00 pm. Share on Facebook | Lions JVs rip Raiders, 41-22 Posted: 26 Oct 2013 10:24 AM PDT The Etna Lions junior varsity football team opened up Homecoming night at Duncan Field with a 41-22 win over the Burney Raiders on Friday. The Raiders had to know that it might not be their night, when they had a long touchdown scoring play called back on an inadvertent whistle–the kind where there is no reasonable explanation as to why it was blown. Burney did, however, rebound from the zebra zoink and score on that possession via a 21-yard run. The 2-point conversion failed, but Burney held a 6-0 lead at the 8:17 mark of the opening frame. Etna responded with 34 unanswered points, 21 of them coming in the first half. Mac Wessell went 23 yards with 6:07 left in the first quarter. David Souza added the extra point, giving Etna a 7-6 advantage. Frank Garcia recovered a fumble to set up the Lions next score. Robert Thom rumbled six yards for a TD. With Souza’s PAT, it was 14-6 at 1:11 in the first. Another fumble recovery, this time by Jesse Garcia, led to a Lion tally. Payton Dickinson did the honors from six yards out. Add the PAT and it was 21-6, with 3:40 to go in the half. Just over three minutes into the third quarter, Dickinson made it 27-6 on a 1-yard run, and Souza made it 28-6. Another fumble recovery by Frank Garcia gave the Lions the ball on the Raiders’ 35. Jesse Garcia scored on an 18-yard reverse, making it 34-6, with 4:39 left in the third. Burney finally scored again with 1:41 to go in the third on a 4-yard run. With a 2-point conversion, it was 34-14. Thom added another TD to his total on a 4-yard run late in the game. With the PAT, Etna led 41-14. Burney scored in the final seconds on a 66-yard run and 2-point conversion for a final of 41-22. Share on Facebook

Merle Haggard gives benefit concert in Yreka, Calif. after wife's narcotics, drug arrest in Siskiyou Posted: 27 Oct 2013 10:05 AM PDT Country music legend Merle Haggard came to Yreka, Calif. on September 21 to give his night to benefit the Friends of the Fair, a volunteer auxiliary supporting the Siskiyou Golden Fair and the Siskiyou County Child Abuse Prevention Council. Behind the scenes was Theresa Ann Lane Haggard's 2013 alleged narcotics and drug possession and trafficking arrest by California Highway Patrol, dWebServe releases for the first time in a breaking YouTube news video. Her arrest and booking information is not found in the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Jail online records. "For Siskiyou County locals, it was an astonishing, odd honor to have country music superstar Merle Haggard choose our small, remote county to receive his Fair Aid 2013 Festival," said Daniel Webster, dWebServe editor and publisher in his YouTube news video. "It gave local bands the extraordinary opportunity to open for Mr. Haggard and pumped several local important organizations with cash." Rain forced the Haggard soiree into the commercial building, with the audience needing to bring their lawn chairs to sit. It was a sold-out event, according to Webster's news video. The concert was announced days after the dismissal for the 2013 alleged narcotics and drug possession and trafficking felony charges. Released for the first time publically, Webster shares his interview with Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus and the California Highway Patrol. He shares the Lane Haggard arrest, booking information and mugshot in Yreka California from 2013 and releases her 2005 driving under the influence (DUI) arrest. "The story behind the story is a message of grace, love and hope," said Webster. "But, most surprisingly, it is all turned around and not what it appears to be according to the public information records. I guess, you'll have to watch the YouTube news video to get the real story." The Merle Haggard benefit concert was announced shortly after the dismissal of the charges by Siskiyou County Superior Court Judge Donald Langford on August 5, 2013. "If the Haggards had played their cards right with Siskiyou, they probably would never have given us a concert," said the Siskiyou County news editor Webster. "It was an extraordinary story of grace, love and hope, but it was being extended to us from the Haggards, not remotely the other way around." There is local talk that country music legend Merle Haggard may consider coming back, according to the news video. Webster personally extends his hope and desire for this to happen in the video, as a personal message from Siskiyou County to the Haggards. Webster was the editor and publisher of the Pioneer Press in Fort Jones, Calif., a small weekly newspaper in northern California. He currently is the editor and publisher of dWebServe.com, a local community news hub for communities around the world. Medford Oregon | KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2 Posted: 27 Oct 2013 09:25 AM PDT Fire District 5 Brushes Up on Fire Training Posted: 26 Oct 2013 06:40 PM PDT Phoenix If you were driving on I-5 this morning between Ashland and Medford, you may have seen a large smoke cloud hovering over Phoenix. It was all because of a home that was on fire, but set by firefighters. Fire District 5 purposely burnt down an old house on Colver Road in Phoenix to practice how to put out fires during the upcoming winter season. About a dozen firefighters and a number of engines with Fire District 5 worked together to put out the intentional burning. Fire Chief Darin Welburn says it's that time of the year again when people are using fireplaces, candles, and extension cords a lot more in their homes. "In a real-world situation, fire developments are occurring very quickly. You know, they say a fire doubles every minute, but with today's construction materials, the amount of plastics and new types of materials you find in houses, they're going super-quick." Chief Welburn says this type of fire training helps prepare firefighters for the fast burning blazes. The Chief also says this type of fire practice happens at least once a year depending on the availability of structures that meet the training requirements. | Small Business Fair Attracts Local Entrepreneurs Posted: 26 Oct 2013 06:36 PM PDT Medford Dozens of entrepreneurs took part in the 11th annual Rogue Valley Business Resource Fair today at the RCC/SOU Higher Education Center. After a quick turnover, SOU struck again as Dodge and Young hooked up on a 53 yard touchdown. Dodge finished the game with 443 yards and seven touchdowns and the Raiders outscored the Bulldogs 34-0 in the second half. This is going to bring in cloud cover, showers and cooler air Sunday afternoon. Snow levels will drop from roughly 6,000′ to 4,000′ by Monday morning. The second half of the weekend will start off sunny. Cloud cover will increase in coverage through the day, preventing high temperatures from warming much. Shower activity will move in from the north across the entire forecast area through the afternoon, with showers continuing through the overnight hours. As snow levels drop these showers will turn to snow in the higher terrain and Klamath Basin. Lingering showers on Monday will be confined to the Cascades and East Side, with isolated activity across Siskiyou County. The cooler air will really settle in by Monday, as this will be the coldest day of the week. However, highs will remain average through much of the week and will most likely feel even cooler than they actually are due to the recent stretch of warm weather. Tuesday through Thursday will bring sunny to mostly sunny skies across inland areas with slightly warming temperatures. One of the cars involved, a mail truck, was flipped completely upside down in the middle of the Evans Creek Road. The other car lie on its side in a ditch, but both drivers were able to walk away from the accident. Jackson County sheriff’s deputies on the scene say a woman in the other car tried to pass the mail truck and lost control. "How the flip on the [mail truck] occurred I'm not exactly sure. The other vehicle that was making the pass basically went off the road, and it was a steep grade on the side of the road. And that caused it to roll on its side," said Sheriff's Deputy Noah Strohmeyer The driver attempting to make the pass was cited for an unsafe pass. The mail truck driver accompanied his car back to the impound lot, where the post office took care of the mail from there. No word has been given from the post office on if and when that mail was delivered. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now
