Medford

So what exactly is Meningitis?
And what are the symptoms you should be on the lookout for?

NBC-5's Roma Villiavicenco joins us with a closer look at the virus.

Kyle, Meningitis is a disease that lives in the central nervous system. There are two forms of it, either bacterial or viral.

Today I spoke to Dr. Alan Bates and he explained that both forms of Meningitis are rare but bacterial can be deadly if not treated within 24 hours, but as kyle mentioned there is no vaccine for the type of bacterial meningitis outbreak in Princeton.

"It's something we should all be aware of. You can get your children and your young adults immunized against this. Even though this particular strain is not there, the other strains are available."

Dr. Bates says both form of Meningitis are extremely contagious. He says if you've been around anyone with the disease you should see a doctor immediately.

Some symptoms of Meningitis include fever, throbbing headaches, and a purple rash.

According to the C.D.C. all strains of meningitis are deadly in 10-15 percent of cases.

Blue Slide Project Aims to Give All Kids a Chance to Play

Grants Pass

For the past two years a Grants Pass mother has been working tirelessly on the "Blue Slide Project". All to create a special place for her son and other children with physical  disabilities to play.

Mona Pinon has raised 85 thousand dollars to build and expand a playground at Parkside Elementary in Grants Pass where her paralyzed son, six year old Isaac, can play with easy access.

Pinon started the idea in 2011 and has been receiving donations from several organizations.

"Our community is full of people that have physical challenges and they're not able to access things like an able-bodied person, and so this playground not only benefits Issac, but the children here at Parkside and our entire community."

She says by summer 2014 the entire playground at Parkside Elementary will be handicap accessible.

To help fund construction costs, you can visit Gasoline Alley and purchase an item donated by Evergreen Bank. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the blue slide project.

Giving a Home to Homeless Pets

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 05:49 PM PST

Medford

Homeless dogs and cats throughout Jackson and Josephine counties are looking for a home this weekend at Medford's Pet Smart. It's their 31st annual adopt a pet weekend.

The animals come from various shelters throughout Southern Oregon and Northern California. Many of the shelters don't have enough room for all the animals in their care.

"If we don't get them adopted, then there's not going to be that money there to keep the shelters going and that would mean more animals going down because they can't get adoptions."

Forty dogs and 25 cats are up for adoption. A fee of 75 to 150 dollars applies per dog or cat depending on their size and age. The money raised goes back to help shelters.

The adoption event ends Sunday at 6pm at Petsmart in Medford on Crater Lake Ave.

video preview image

WEATHER DISCUSSION

Overnight there is a slight chance for light showers and snow showers above 4,000 feet, Diamond Lake Summit is still covered in snow and caution should be taken driving in the high country through tomorrow morning. Patchy for will develop at the coast and west side valleys by tomorrow morning but won’t linger long into the day with increasing sunshine in the afternoon.

Monday afternoon is when our next storm system will bringing moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds to the area. This system will be tapping into tropical moisture meaning two things: more moisture will be present to create heavy rain at times for the coast and higher elevations on the west side as well as high snow levels, between 6,000 and 7,000 feet. This storm will create river rises but not expecting flooding at this time. This storm will linger into early Thursday which means all areas will receive decent precipitation by Thursday with drying conditions Friday. Stay tuned to Newswatch12 for the latest on the timing and threats of this next storm system.

Thanks for logging on and have a great weekend!

Ducks Run Away From Utes Late, Win 44-21

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 08:18 PM PST

1116ducksCourtesy: Oregon Sports Information

EUGENE, Ore. – Marcus Mariota’s knee didn’t matter all that much against Utah.

Oregon’s sophomore quarterback threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns and the sixth-ranked Ducks rebounded from last week’s loss to Stanford with a 44-21 victory over Utah on Saturday.

Mariota went into the game with questions about the health of his left knee, which impacted his mobility in the 26-20 loss to the Cardinal.

De’Anthony Thomas caught a touchdown pass and scored on an 86-yard kickoff return for the Ducks (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12). Byron Marshall ran for two additional scores but the Ducks were slowed on the ground by Utah’s defense, rushing for 145 yards after averaging nearly 302 yards a game this season.

Utah (4-6, 1-6) was dealt a blow before the game when starting quarterback Travis Wilson didn’t make the trip to Eugene because of a concussion. Backup Adam Schulz threw for 157 yards and a touchdown and ran for another.

The loss to Stanford in all likelihood ended the Ducks’ shot at a spot in the national championship game.

Depending on how the rest of the season plays out, it may have also cost them a place in the Pac-12 championship game.

Mariota, who wore a brace on his knee against both Stanford and the Utes, insisted this week that his knee wasn’t an issue, but wouldn’t say if he was 100 percent. As a policy, Oregon does not discuss injuries.

Utah’s lone conference win this season came against Stanford. The Utes have lost four straight since then.

Wilson did not travel to Oregon for Saturday’s game. The 6-foot-7 sophomore is averaging 203 yards passing per game this season. He’s thrown 16 touchdowns with 16 interceptions.

Schulz had appeared in just three games for the Utes this season, completing 22 of 45 passes with one touchdown and one interception.

Mariota hit Thomas with an 8-yard touchdown pass and the Ducks added a 31-yard field goal by true freshman Matt Wogan to make it 10-0 in the first quarter.

Wogan took over as Oregon’s kicker for the final three games of the season, replacing Alejandro Maldonado, who missed a 37-yard field goal before halftime of the Ducks’ game against UCLA.

The Utes narrowed the gap on Schulz’s 34-yard pass to Jake Murphy with 2:52 left in the half.

Murphy was making his return after wrist surgery following the Utes’ Oct. 3 loss to UCLA. It was thought that the junior tight end might miss the rest of the regular season.

The Ducks answered the Utes quickly by scoring on Mariota’s 5-yard pass to Josh Huff – concluding a drive that took three plays and just 24 seconds – to make it 17-7 at the half.

After a 4-yard scoring run from Schulz, Oregon again quickly came back with Thomas’ touchdown on the kickoff return to make it 23-14.

The Ducks extended the lead on Mariota’s 14-yard scoring pass to Johnny Mundt, and Marshall’s 17-yard scoring run made it 37-14 with 32 seconds left in the third quarter.

Marshall added a 16-yard touchdown run in the fourth. Soon thereafter, Oregon sat Mariota.

With most of the Ducks’ starters out of the game, Bubba Poole ran for a 10-yard Utah touchdown with 6:01 left.

Still a Heisman candidate despite the questions about his knee, Mariota has thrown for 25 touchdowns this season, and run for nine more. He has not thrown an interception since last season.

Saturday’s game was the first between the teams since Utah joined the conference in 2011. Oregon won the last meeting 31-24 at Autzen Stadium in 2009.

Library Raises Funds as Closure Looms

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 05:21 PM PST

11-16 ashland libraryASHLAND, Ore. – The Ashland Library is raising money for its services even as dwindling county funds bring it closer and closer to closing its doors.

The Friends of the Ashland Public Library had their annual book sale and silent auction on Saturday. It's the biggest fundraising event of the year for the organization, which provides most of the services the library offers.

This event is expected to raise several thousand dollars for the Ashland branch as closure looms in the distance.

"The funding for the county I believe would be running out next year, so they’d be looking at closing the branches, and then after that they’d be looking at closing the system," said Friends of the Ashland Public Library president Amanda Casserly.

Casserly says the money from the event isn’t enough to save the library, but she's hopeful a service district will be set up to provide dedicated funding to the county’s libraries.

That ballot measure is coming up in May.

Record Fundraising for Local Ski Teams

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 05:14 PM PST

11-16 ski swaMEDFORD, Ore. – Southern Oregon high schools are on pace to have a record fundraising year for their ski teams this season.

The annual ski and snowboard swap opened its doors to a line of 200 people Friday night and continues through the weekend.

As of Friday night, the event had raised 20% more money than last year, all of which goes to support about 30 kids representing 5 school ski teams in the area.

"Our program is about $1,200 a kid. We only charge $500. The rest of the money to pay for the program comes from events like this. So this is our big fundraiser for the year," said event organizer Craig Lyle.

Saint Mary's high school donated their gym for the event, and a number of local shops donated gear to sell.

Move to Expand the "State of Jefferson" is Heard in Tehama County!

Posted: 15 Nov 2013 11:18 PM PST

The drive to expand the "State of Jefferson" continues to grow......

Now Tehama County is having its say! As reported in the Chico Enterprise Record and Redding Record Searchlight, Tehama County residents and Board of Supervisors has taken up the question of whether to join in the move to create a new state from portions of northern California and southern Oregon.

For more, visit:

http://www.redbluffdailynews.com/business/ci_24530134/crowd-gathers-tehama-county-mull-state-jefferson-plan

AND....

http://www.chicoer.com/news/ci_24528527/tehama-officials-get-look-at-proposed-state-jefferson

According to one spokesman, Tom Knorr, "Northern California will not survive as the fifth wheel of California's train wreck."  Proponents stated that with as much confusion that exists in California's politics, it only makes sense to separate into a 51st state (once the proposed 49th state until the Bombing of Pearl Harbor brought an end to the movement of 1941).

What will happen? It's hard to predict and yet, it's a hard-earned "dream" that many in the rugged region of Northern California and Southern Oregon seem to share. Perhaps the mythical State of Jefferson is destined to become a real entity!?????
