Jefferson Declaration Posted: 04 Nov 2013 09:37 AM PST Tehama Co. to ponder withdrawal as part of State of Jefferson movement Posted: 03 Nov 2013 06:43 PM PST Please mark your calendars Wed. Nov. 13th and plan to attend this meeting in support of Tehama County! Details at the end of this article! — Comment from Rally Sally Tehama County to ponder secession as part of State of Jefferson movement Redding Record Searchlight Nov. 3, 2013 Next week the State of Jefferson movement will try to sway Tehama County join its efforts to leave California. The county's board of supervisors will hear from the public about seceding from the state of California, at a special meeting Nov. 13, said Dennis Garton, the board's chairman. "People have said, 'What are we going to do? Are we going to join like other counties?' We said, 'No, we're not going to join them until we have more information,'" Garton said. "I need the information that's going to be presented that night to make an informed decision." The public meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. at the board's chambers, 727 Oak St., will address the State of Jefferson movement to split off counties north of Sacramento from the state. The board will not make any decisions about joining the movement, Garton said. City council members from Red Bluff, Corning and Tehama have also been invited, he said. Siskiyou and Modoc counties' supervisors have expressed support for forming a new state. The city of Redding, however, narrowly voted against supporting the movement, which historically sought a 51st state made up of rural southern Oregon and northern California. Garton said Tom Knorr will speak in favor of the movement. Knorr said he will tackle the lack of north state voices in state government. "This is an opportunity to unite with the other northern counties and have a united front against the California legislature," Knorr said. He said he's also asking businesses to talk about how California's regulations have hurt their businesses. More lax regulations would free up businesses to expand, he said. "We would like to have a much more business friendly environment," he said. "I think we can make it work." Jim Reed, a Red Bluff Democrat, said that the north state's economy would be too small without some of the more urban areas of the state. He has called for splitting the state of California a different way. "California has a population equal to the 22 smallest states' population. Those states have 44 senators, California has two," he said. "Three times the number of senators is better than two. If we divide California in half, San Francisco and the Bay Area would be part of the north." Knorr, however, said the senate's style of representation would help the north state's problems in the California legislature. Until 1964, population was just one factor used to draw state legislative districts, Knorr said. A court ruling restricted redistricting to population only, he said. "I understand that was put in place because cities were not properly represented and now we have the exact reverse problem — cities are ruling the rural counties," he said. Reed, however, said the North State should split because of its water supply and the voracious water appetites in southern California. "Our fear is they're going to suck us dry. Eventually, there is going to be a proposition, and guess what, So Cal has more votes than Nor Cal," he said. "If we split up, we'd have a much better chance of avoiding that." Reed said dividing the state just north of the Bay Area and at the Tehachapi mountains would provide an ideal environment. Supervisor Garton said he remains undecided on the idea of secession. "We need input from the community… School districts, the fair, anybody that gets state funds needs to be there to give us input," he said. "We need that input — pro and con." Our real concern is about lack of EQUAL Representation and tyrannical over-regulation by 570 California agencies.
