KDRV Posted: 10 Nov 2013 09:29 AM PST Winners Crowned in Dancing Competition Posted: 09 Nov 2013 11:55 PM PST MEDFORD, Ore. – After much anticipation, winners have been crowned in the 5th annual Dancing with the Rogue Valley Stars Competition. CH Chou took home the judges’ choice award, with Holly Roberts, a local court appointed special advocate, earning the popular vote. Newswatch 12's Christy Lewis and Alyssa Caroprese also walked away with awards. Alyssa won the popular vote in the afternoon show and got third place in the evening show. Christy won second place for judges choice Saturday evening. But the real point of the event is to raise money for Sparrow Clubs and USA Dance. In that respect, Sparrow Clubs leaders say there were plenty of winners. "Last year the star fundraising efforts topped out at around $18,000, we grossed for the entire event about $41,000," said Sparrow Clubs Executive Director Matt Sampson. "We’re already at that mark just from the stars’ fundraising efforts, so it’s going to be almost double the entire gross of last year’s… I just can’t believe it." Money from contestant fundraising and ticket sales go to support the two charities. Newswatch 12 will be airing all of the performances on Christmas day at 6:00PM. The Raiders were previously unbeaten on their home field in three years under Craig Howard. SOU held a 37-24 lead in the second half when the Mountaineers picked off Austin Dodge in the red zone. The Mountaineers then scored on a fourth down to pull within 37-31. SOU tried to run out the clock, but were stopped on a fourth and inches near midfield. This set up Eastern for the go ahead touchdown with less than two minutes to go. SOU drove down the field and got into field goal position, but Jeremy Scottow was stripped inside the 20 and Eastern Oregon recovered to seal the game. SOU will wrap up its season next weekend on the road against Montana Tech. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now | Police Chase Ends in Arrest Posted: 09 Nov 2013 11:20 PM PST MEDFORD, Ore. – Just after 7:00 Saturday morning, Brian Gross was interrupted by an unusual sound. "All of a sudden I heard sirens. And then I heard some yelling coming from over there just beyond the trees, beyond the hedge, and I heard somebody yelling stop, stop," said witness Brian Gross. Gross watched as a man sprinted past an opening in the bushes of his back yard. He says his first instinct was to chase him down, but when the police showed up in force, he decided otherwise. "They were obviously trying to set up a perimeter, so I just said, ‘two houses down!’" recalled Gross. Police say that man was 23-year old Medford transient Dominic Pritchett. Pritchett apparently stole a 2005 Mercedes Benz from the neighborhood near Keene Way and Hillcourt, got into a hit and run with another car, and eventually crashed near the corner of Hillcrest and Modoc. Then, he started running. Police set up a perimeter and gave chase, but couldn’t catch up. "He had a jump on them, you know, tall fences… Lots of stuff can account for someone getting away, but officers weren’t right behind him, he was a little ways away, explained Corporal Chris Dode with the Medford Police. Hours later they found Pritchett walking along the side of the road. While he remains in custody and prepares to face charges, neighbors say they’re left with memories of a scene that was more like a reality show than real life. "You see it on TV, but it’s a little more exhilarating when you’re experiencing it first-hand," said Gross. Pritchett was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, attempting to evade police, and hit and run. Police say the stolen car has been released to its owners, although with some heavy front-end damage. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now | Cold Tonight with Fog Posted: 09 Nov 2013 11:01 PM PST WEATHER DISCUSSION Overnight tonight fog will return to the region with areas of freezing fog creating slick roads at times for west and east side valleys. Temperatures will be cold again with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies with mid to low 30 on the west side, teens and mid to low 20s on the east side and low to mid 40s at the coast. Fog and low clouds will lead to another chilly morning with temperatures slowly rising until the clouds clear and the sunshine is able to ramp up the heating. Sunday night into Monday will be more of the same with fog in the forecast through the extended forecast. A storm system will bring rain to the coast overnight Monday and mainly Tuesday at the coast with lighter rain totals inland and only a slight chance for isolated showers on the east side. Winds will pick up as this cold front moves through and will be the main impact for areas to the east. Midweek a ridge begins to build which will return afternoon sunshine to the areas after morning fog and dry conditions through the end of workweek and likely into the weekend. The event was held at the Grange Co-Op’s North Medford Pet Country. Fashion show dogs were accompanied on the runway’s red carpet by local residents, grange co-op employees, and animal shelter volunteers. 74 different outfits went down the red carpet on 17 dogs and one cat. Our own Megan Parry MC'd the event. Besides a fashion show, there was a silent auction and “best dressed” contest. About three to four hundred people came out to watch the show and bid on items. The event’s goal was 10 thousand dollars, but organizers hope this year’s event will bring in closer to 13 to 14 thousand dollars. Proceeds from the event go to Friends of the Animal Shelter. The competition – part “Iron Chef,” part “Chopped” – is part of the 7th Annual Ashland Culinary Festival. Organizers say at least 600 people are expected to show up at the Ashland Armory throughout the weekend. In addition to watching the chef’s competition, attendees can try samplings and pairings from over 20 winemakers, brewers, and artisan food makers. Organizers say it’s representative of Ashland's vibrant and growing food scene. "We have over 80 restaurants in Ashland. With a small town of 20-thousand you don’t normally expect that, but we have a very highly-educated visitor, and so we have sophisticated amenities," explained Ashland Culinary Festival Organizer Katharine Flanagan. The culinary festival continues through Sunday. It will be capped off with a dessert competition at 12:30, followed by the final round of the chef competition later in the afternoon. The fire was reported to be burning in the attic of the home. Though the homeowner attacked the fire with a hose from outside of the home, firefighters had to access the attic from inside and tear into the roof from the outside to completely extinguish the fire. The fire originated where the stove pipe exited the wall and went through the roofing to the chimney. There was damage to items stored in the attic and smoke damage in the home. "As the cold weather sets in, it's really important for residents to inspect all heating sources to make sure they are well maintained for the winter heating season," said Battalion Chief Dana Sallee, incident commander at the fire. Twenty firefighters and command staff from Ashland and District #5 responded to the second alarm fire. Safety information on winter fire preparedness is available here. Jefferson Declaration Posted: 10 Nov 2013 09:29 AM PST Veterans Day parade celebrates service in Shasta Lake Posted: 09 Nov 2013 10:19 PM PST Brad Garrison/Special to the Record Searchlight Shasta Lake parade kicks off weekend’s events Redding.com -
Posted November 9, 2013 at 6 p.m. Volunteers from the Northern California Veterans Museum re-enact the famous image from Iwo Jima during the Veterans Day parade in Shasta Lake on Saturday. SHASTA LAKE — For Jack Tolbert, this Veterans Day weekend was different. Four generations of his family were in the Shasta Lake parade alongside the decorated Korean War veteran Saturday, like always. Their cart was towed by a miniature donkey, Clementine. But this year's parade comes less than a month after another milestone for veterans in Northern California — the opening of a veterans home in Redding. "That veterans home is about the best thing that's happened here," he said. "Do you enjoy your freedom? That is what it's for." His was one of about 70 entries in the parade, which featured floats, horse riders, classic cars and more. The procession made its way down a Shasta Dam Boulevard lined with people on both sides Saturday morning. Tolbert, who was a sergeant first class in the Army's 65th Regimental Combat Team, lost both legs when he dived on a grenade thrown into a foxhole. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for bravery and is also a Purple Heart recipient. Tolbert helped bring the home into existence for veterans — from older ones up to who those who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. That includes Sgt. George Traver, who served with the National Guard's 193rd MP Battalion Internment and Resettlement. "We're here with the fishy food tour. We're touring across the Western United States to call attention for the need for labeling genetically engineered foods also known as GMOs" The vegetables respresent the most common genetically modified crops. "Labeling GMOs is important not only to the health of our families and farms but also for our food democracy." A battle that Rrica Madrid says has been ongoing with global GMO producers Monsanto and Syngenta. "Monsanto would have you believe that GMOs are nutritionally equivalent to any other food that farmers can produce." But Madrid begs to differ. "GMOs are quite different from traditional farmers methods of selective breeding and hybridization. GMOs are created in a labratory by scientists who can turn genes on and off, but we have no idea what the long-term impact is going to be." And for that reason Madrid and the Fishy Fleet crew started their campaign in Seattle in August and will end up in New York City sometime in December, in hopes of spreading awareness about labeling GMOs. | Pets Prepare for Holidays Posted: 09 Nov 2013 06:32 PM PST Medford Kittens were looking for a forever home today at the Southern Oregon Humane Society in Medford. All three shelters: C.A.T.S., Jackson County, and ourselves have a long waiting list of cats wanting, needing to come in and there's simply no room." Within the first hour of the event ten cats were adopted. There are still a number of cats available and the event will go on tomorrow as well from 10 to 5pm. Santa Claus gave a surprise visit to some local dogs in the Rogue Valley today. This beef is not found in your grocery store because it requires extra handling and time to produce a product of this standard. The quality of feed impacts the quality of the beef; our cows, Angus-cross bred, never leave the ranch where they are born but are raised on pasture grass -- much of which is native grass -- in the spring, summer and fall. In winter, when temperatures drop into the teens or lower, we feed our own grass-alfalfa hay. Finally, we keep our animals for a longer period of time, which increases the flavor of the final product. If you haven't visited our website yet, check out our WINTER SPECIAL!
