Posted: 02 Nov 2013 06:40 PM PDT

Medford

After seven months of local foods and vendors in Medford, and some rainy weather, the Saturday Rogue Valley Growers Market came to an end today.

Market Manager Jill Kennedy says this has been a successful year.

Earlier this year the market moved to their new location at the commons on 6th and Bartlett. She says they were up 300 percent from last year.

"We brought a lot more money into the economy because of the vendors that came down here and the people that shopped here. So a lot more people shopped local, which is really important to us."

Kennedy says they look forward to next year's market season. The Rogue Valley Growers Market has a five year contract at the Lithia Commons location.

ASHLAND, Ore. – The fourth-ranked Southern Oregon University men’s basketball team’s slow start to the season was short-lived Saturday night against Pacific Union.

The Raiders’ five-point lead ballooned in a hurry during their 88-45 win over the Pioneers at Bob Riehm Arena thanks to eight second-half 3-pointers. In the last 16 minutes of the game, they outscored the Pioneers 50-12.

Senior post David Sturner (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) went for 20 points and 11 rebounds while Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg), his counterpart inside, had 19 points, nine rebounds and knocked down three straight triples to spark the run. They combined to shoot 18-for-28 from the field.

Kyle Tedder (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) poured in 17 points and knocked down five from outside to tie Ryan Harbert for SOU’s career record for 3-pointers. His total now stands at 220.

Sophomore guard Joel Spear (Adelaide, Australia/St. Michaels) had nine assists and a pair of steals and Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg), a junior wing, keyed the Raiders’ attack of Pacific Union’s zone with eight assists. He also threw in two blocks.

The Raiders went 22-for-42 from the field after halftime.

They held the Pioneers (0-2 overall) to 23.1-percent shooting (15-for-65) from the field and 3-for-30 from 3-point range. Demetrius Deason paced Pacific Union with 13 points.

SOU will remain home for Monday’s 7:30 p.m. game against Simpson.

SOU Drops Battle For 1st to Carroll

Posted: 02 Nov 2013 11:52 PM PDT

Sou Drops 1st Place Battle

Courtesy: Southern Oregon University Athletics

HELENA, Mont. – The Southern Oregon Raiders are the defending Frontier Conference champions, but Carroll College still rules the league. SOU couldn’t overcome the biggest home field advantage in the NAIA on Saturday afternoon, and its Frontier Conference title hopes took a major blow as a result.

Five turnovers doomed the 20th-ranked Raiders in their 48-30 loss at fifth-ranked Carroll College, marking the Saints’ 50th win in their last 52 games at Nelson Stadium. The Saint (8-1 overall, 7-1 conference) took over sole possession of first place with the win and the Raiders (6-3, 6-2) dropped into a second-place tie with Rocky Mountain.

SOU quarterback Austin Dodge (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview) hit Ryan Retzlaff (Medford, Ore./South Medford) with a 15-yard touchdown pass to cut Carroll’s lead to 14-10 with 10 minutes left in the second quarter, but the Saints responded with 34 unanswered points.

The Raiders actually outgained the Saints, 559-531, but the Saints didn’t turn it over once and at one point scored on three straight takeaways.

The back-breaking sequence of the afternoon occurred in the third quarter when Dustin Rinker ran in a touchdown for Carroll and on SOU’s next play from scrimmage Matt Upham returned an interception for a touchdown, making it 41-10. Upham finished with two picks.

Carroll tailback Dustin Rinker rushed 31 times for 160 yards and a touchdown. Dakota Stonehouse completed 12 passes for 298 yards and three scores, and threw in 55 rushing yards and a TD on the ground.

Dodge completed 29 of 45 passes for 435 yards and three touchdowns but also threw three interceptions for the first time since his freshman season.

Ryan Retzlaff (Medford, Ore./South Medford) caught 12 passes for 181 yards and two scores while Matt Retzlaff (Medford, Ore./South Medford) had three catches for 104 yards and a score. Ryan Retzlaff (Medford, Ore./South Medford) has hit triple-digits receiving yardage in four straight games.

Sean Tow (Diamond Springs, Calif./Union Mine) accounted for SOU’s other touchdown. The freshman netted 81 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Laurence Calcagno (Canby, Ore./Canby) paced the Raider defense with seven assisted tackles, five solo and a sack. Daniel Breaux (Greenfield, Calif./Greenfield) chipped in 7.5 total tackles.

The Raiders will host Eastern Oregon in their final home game next Saturday at 1 p.m. If SOU wins and Rocky Mountain can knock off Carroll that same day, there will be a three-way tie for first in the Frontier.

Showers Taper Off Sunday Afternoon

Posted: 02 Nov 2013 10:50 PM PDT

video preview image

WEATHER DISCUSSION

Tonight through tomorrow morning some areas, especially the Cascades, will see periods of steady showers. This may impact travel over the Cascade passes with snow covered roads and reduced visibilities, though the heavies precipitation has exited our region. Snow levels will drop to 3,000 feet by Sunday morning and only rise slightly through the day.

Shower activity will decrease through the day on Sunday with most areas but the higher elevations dry by the afternoon with more sunshine. We remain in an active weather pattern as a longwave trough sits over the Pacific Northwest, this means a chance for showers will be present each day though most activity will be light and isolated through midweek. Wednesday will be the driest day of the week with the most sunshine before a cold front arrives on Thursday bringing another chance for widespread showers across the region and periods of moderate rain at the coast and Cascades. Friday will bring another brief break in shower activity with another round of rain likely Saturday.

Temperatures will also remain at or below normal into next weekend with cold mornings across the region. Areas of morning frost are possible for west side valleys through the week with patchy fog as well.

Share you photos with me on Facebook! Thanks for logging on and have a great rest of your weekend!

Last Day for Downtown Farmer’s Market

Posted: 02 Nov 2013 06:14 PM PDT

11-2 jbo market last dayMEDFORD, Ore. – Medford’s Saturday farmers market is packed up for the winter after finishing its last day of the season Saturday.

The rain kept turnout relatively small for the market's last day, but organizers say overall they tripled in size compared to last year — both in terms of vendors and attendance.

This was the market’s first year in the downtown commons. Organizers say they plan to expand even further next year.

"We have room for a hundred vendors. If we have enough customers to support that, the vendors will come," said market manager Jill Kennedy.

Signup for new vendors for next year’s Saturday market starts in January.

Vendors already at the downtown location say they’re looking forward to the seasonal break.

The Tuesday and Thursday markets in Medford and Ashland will continue until the end of the month.

Food Banks Hurt as SNAP Benefits Drop

Posted: 02 Nov 2013 06:09 PM PDT

11-2 food bankASHLAND, Ore. – As cuts to snap benefits take effect, food banks struggle to keep up with demand.

The Ashland Emergency Food Bank says they’ve seen a 25% increase in demand in the past few months. In October alone, the food bank served a record-breaking 1,300-1,400 people. Around three quarters of those people are on snap benefits.

Now those benefits are dropping about 6%, and the food bank is already the last option for those families receiving benefits.

"There are no more resources out there, so those of us who are in the food business are just going to have to really work together," said Ashland Emergency Food Band Manager Pam Marsh. "It’s going to be thin, but it’ll be something."

Marsh says they'll never turn people away, but they may have to ration food for families already struggling to get proper nutrition.

"We’re never not going to serve people," said Marsh. "We’re going to do everything we can."

Now food banks around the region are calling for more donations. They say demand is expected to rise even more during the holiday season.

Siskiyou: Please attend Fort Jones Town Council meeting 11-4-13

Posted: 02 Nov 2013 08:20 PM PDT

Scott Valley, Siskiyou County and other citizens are encouraged to attend the Fort Jones Town Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 4, 2013.

Time is 7 p.m.

Place is the Fort Jones Community Center.

The council will be discussing and or voting on 2 very important items.

First is the vote on a Resolution to support “we the people” against the USFS extensive road closures in the Travel Management Plan. Much of the Klamath National Forest has been closed because of regulations that lock-out the public and stop the use of the USFS road system. We must be vocal against this abuse and support the cities and towns in Siskiyou County in this Resolution.

Second: The Siskiyou Jefferson Declaration Committee will attend the meeting to discuss the Council voting to support the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors in its Sept. 3, 2013 Declaration to withdraw from the State of California.

Spokesman Mark Baird will be in attendance as will as other supporters.

Please attend this meeting and vocally support a return to freedom and liberty.

Thanks.
