First Significant Snowfall This Weekend

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 08:01 AM PDT

video preview image

WEATHER DISCUSSION

Today will be the last of the dry and mild weather we’ve been seeing all week. Our first significant snow event will move inland this weekend, bringing heavy rain to the Coast, rain to the valleys, snow to the mountains and breezy conditions to much of the region.

Cloud cover will increase this evening after midnight. Rain will begin falling early tomorrow morning at the Coast and continue driving inland. Once the cold front moves through, snow levels will drop significantly. Widespread rain is expected initially, with a transition over to rain and snow in the higher terrain and over parts of the East Side, although more showery activity is expected for the Klamath Basin.

By Saturday evening, snow levels will be between 3,000' and 4,000.' The rain and snow showers will be ongoing through Saturday evening, and will also linger into Sunday. Drivers will need to be cautious over the passes and in the higher terrain through the overnight hours Saturday between snow showers, which may be heavy at times, and the breezy conditions.

By Sunday evening, between 3" & 6" of snow is anticipated to fall in the Southern Oregon Cascades. Locally, higher amounts are expected – 6"-8." Over the Siskiyous, 1"-3" in total for the weekend is expected. Siskiyou County will also see mainly shower activity through Saturday, and as of now, will stay fairly dry Sunday.

The cool and active weather pattern will be persistent through at least the middle of the next week with several disturbances following this weekend's storm.

Police Keep Close Eye On Ashland

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 12:55 AM PDT

ASHLAND, Ore. — Costumes of all types were seen at the Ashland Plaza, and so were police. They wanted to make their presence known to make sure no super heroes were needed if things got out of hand.

Halloween is a tradition in Ashland, but one that has had a rocky past.

“We had some bad years, 2004 I remember, 2005, 2006 were rough years,” said Ashland Police Deputy Chief Cory Falls.

Ashland Police Deputy Chief Cory Falls remembers several years ago when the crowds got out of control and ended up in handcuffs.

“2004 there was a lot of people who went to jail, a lot of assaults, people climbing onto the roof tops and throwing things down at police officers. We had a police car get its windows smashed out," said Deputy Chief Cory Falls.

Since those days nearly ten years ago, changes have been made and more resources have been brought in. Medford Police and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office are among the agencies who now assist Ashland Police.

“We come down every year now and just help out,” Medford Police Sgt. Josh Reimer.

The potential problems stem from those out and about downtown and not necessarily on the road.

“Most of our jobs are foot patrols, so we’re out on foot, we don’t have a lot of vehicles out,” said Sgt. Josh Reimer.

Police said the idea is to have a presence and to take care of problems before they get out of hand. The Halloween operation takes about a month to plan and police said it has made all the difference in assuring people have a safe and happy Halloween.

“Just having the extra bodies and the presence in the downtown area to stop problems before they start has really helped us,” said Deputy Chief Cory Falls.

Over the past several years since other agencies have come down to help with foot patrols, significantly fewer problems have been reported.

Amateur Athlete: Mason Montgomery

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 07:34 PM PDT

ASHLAND, Ore. —  Mason Montgomery has the instincts of a great football player. Those instincts go along with a passionate motivation.

“I feel like he has certainly the tangible skills, but he’s got great intangibles,” said head coach Charlie Hall. “His work ethic and his competitiveness are just off the charts.”

Those skills, whether tangible or intangible, are partly rooted in his family tree. Mason’s father Mitch played football at Southern Oregon University in the 90s. One of his coaches at the time was Charlie Hall, now Mason’s head coach at Ashland.

“Mitch was part of a really good team, and I think things really started to ascend for the program at that time, you know?” said Hall. “Some good players started to emerge out of the SOU program.”

Mason and his brother Max were babies at the time, but it wasn’t long before their parents started to see the skills that Hall now praises.

“They always had the knack to hit hard even when they were really little,” said Mitch. “They had this, I don’t know, it was crazy, always this, BAM, all the time. Everybody was like, ‘wow, they hit really hard.’ They loved it, and I liked watching it.”

“They started off with soccer, and then it was just like Mason was too aggressive for that,” said Molly Montgomery. “Then he played football and he was really excited because he said, ‘mom, I tackled somebody and they were saying good job,’ because in soccer, he would accidentally knock kids over.”

Now, it’s not so accidental. Mason is one of the top linebackers in the state. He’s also one of Oregon’s best wrestlers, but he prefers football.

“Wrestling’s an individual sport,” said Mason. “It’s great. I love the competition, but winning a game with guys that you’ve been working so hard with for so long, there’s nothing like that.”
One of the guys Mason gets to share those wins with is his brother Max.

“It’s been fun to kind of compete with him and try to be as good as he is,” said Max. “Obviously he’s pretty good so it’s fun to have that brotherly competition.”

As much as Max looks up to Mason, both brothers look up to Mitch.

“It was the reason we started playing football so, yeah, I learned a lot from him,” said Max. “He kind of taught me the basics of football.”

Mason enjoys football because it feels like a family on the field. Maybe that’s because football is a part of his family.

Dry for Trick-or-Treating

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 07:00 PM PDT

WEATHER DISCUSSION

A weak warm front brought a few light showers to the northern areas today with just a few more clouds this morning for inland areas. Shower activity has ended and for all the trick-or-treaters out tonight it will be dry, albeit a bit chilly. Tomorrow will be the warmest day of the week with plenty of the sunshine from the coast to the basin. Things change Saturday as a cold front moves in knocking temperatures down yet again below average and dropping snow levels to 4,000 feet and potentially as low as 3,000 feet at times. This will bring snow to the Cascade passes and with gusty winds may reduce visibility at times. We could see gusts up to 45mph on Saturday with winds picking up late Friday and rain beginning at the coast after midnight Friday. Be prepared for winter travel this weekend if headed over the passes.

Most of the rain and snow on Saturday will fall along and west of the Cascades with more spotty showers to the east side and Siskiyou county. A few showers will continue into Sunday and Monday with another chance for rain Tuesday and Thursday. While it won’t rain all day everyday we will see periods of rain at times into next week. Stay tuned to Newswatch12 for the latest.

Thanks for logging on and have a great evening!

Mini-Marts and SNAP

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 06:23 PM PDT

video preview image

MEDFORD, Ore. — Starting Friday, food stamp benefits will be cut. More than 47 million people currently receive food stamps. These cuts are the result of an expiration of a provision in the 2009 stimulus. As those reductions take effect, the options that people can buy with food stamps can be limited.

The state of Oregon has important requirements for stores to accept food stamps, but some stores find ways around those rules, and the food they sell those low-income families is not healthy.

When you think of a meal, you probably don’t think of candy, chips and soda, but for some low-income families, depending on where they live and shop, that can be a reality. Now some groups are cracking down on stores to make sure people get the healthy food they need.

If you don’t make much money, don’t have a car, and live far away from a supermarket, these mini marts may be your closest source of food.

With cuts to food stamps, people have less to spend, and what they’re getting on the cheap isn’t always nutritious. In order to accept food stamps, stores need to offer fresh fruits vegetables, dairy, bread and meat, but most mini marts make their money off a different food pyramid, candy, chips, soda, beer and cigarettes.

Some stores try to get around food stamp requirements. NewsWatch12 walked through several stores that accepted the Oregon Trail food stamp card, also known as the SNAP program, and found the bare minimum: a couple pieces of fruit sitting out. They’re not breaking the law, but it’s not exactly, “putting healthy food within reach”.

ACCESS wants to do something about it.

"We’re helping to promote nutritional items that they’re willing to carry, and coupling them with local farmers so that we can get good products in the store," explained Philip Yates with ACCESS.

One of those is the Peach Street Market. They began offering fresh fruit last year, but for the first few months, much of it was being thrown away.

"When I first introduced it, there was absolutely no profit, there was a loss, as a matter of fact," said Nancy Murrish, the owner of Peach St. Market.

Murrish says she’s worked hard to promote the healthy options, both for her customers’ health, and her business’s health.

"Even though I make my profit off of the cigarettes, the beers, the candy, the soda pops, the unhealthy things, I have a conscience about the health of people in the neighborhood," Murrish said.

The USDA licenses stores to accept the SNAP card. This year, they investigated 5,000 stores across the country, and fined and disqualified almost 700 stores for violating program rules.

Illegal Pot Cartel Funds Other Drugs

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 05:51 PM PDT

Drug CartelsNEAR ASHLAND, Ore. — To slow down the use of drugs like cocaine, law enforcement focuses efforts on illegal marijuana grows.

NewsWatch 12 brought you a story on the marijuana clean up in Jackson County on Wednesday night. It’s grow sites like those which investigators target to hurt other drug cartels.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says the pot grow sites is what provides financial support for drug trade organizations, or DTOs. The money from illegal pot helps DTOs continue producing, selling and operating.

"They’re all poly-drug organizations. The DTOs are not focused on marijuana, it’s just an easy cash crop. They're also involved with heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine," explained Jackson County Lt. Matt Thomson.

The multiple grows where crews are cleaning up in Jackson County are not medical marijuana sites.

15th Annual Ashland Halloween Parade

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 05:41 PM PDT

ashland parade 2ASHLAND, Ore. — Hundreds of people dressed up and walked the streets of downtown Ashland for the annual Halloween parade. This is the fifteenth year for the parade.

Parade coordinators say, this year, they tried to change the parade so it would have more of a harvest festival feel. Not only was there a parade that traveled through downtown Ashland, but there were also stations set up at different businesses along main street offering activities.

“Ashland has a lot of creativity," said Katharine Flanagan, the Marketing Director at the Ashland Chamber of Commerce. "There is a big artist community here and since we have been doing this for 15 years we actually have children who have grown up creating a tradition to create their costumes and come down to Ashland so they have their own family traditions they have developed over the past years."

The parade is funded by the Ashland Chamber Of Commerce. They say they plan on having the parade again next year. Planning for that will begin next summer.

Police and Businesses Prep for Halloween

ASHLAND, Ore. — Downtown Ashland is preparing for one of their busiest nights of the year. Businesses are opening early and police are coming in late to work the night shift.

It’s going to be a crazy night down below, but police say they are not doing anything out of the ordinary this year. There will be more than 30 officers on foot walking around making sure the grown up ghosts and goblins behave themselves.

Once again the Ashland Police Department is getting assistance from the Talent, Phoenix, And Medford Police departments, along with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

Restaurants and police both say safety is their number one priority. NewsWatch12 spoke with Paddy’s Irish Pub who says it is taking extra security measures, placing a bouncer at the door to check IDs.

"I'm sure there are going to be people trying to sneak in, but you know we are going to have to check people’s faces. If they have a mask they’re going to have to take it off to check ID," said Paddy's owner, Stefanie De Kesel.

Paddy’s also says it overstocked its beverages, and has all employees working tonight to accommodate the Halloween crowd.

“Cover Oregon” Turns to Paperwork

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 05:29 PM PDT

MEDFORD, Ore. — Website representatives of Cover Oregon first said they hoped to open online enrollment by the end of October. Here it is, Halloween night, and the site is not ready.

A local insurance agent says he’s tired of waiting, and so are his clients. So, right now, he’s sending out paper enrollment forms to 100% of his clients, going back to old way of doing things.

Cover Oregon representatives say engineers are still working out the bugs with the site so it’s in top shape for enrollment, and until then, representatives want you to put pen to paper.

A local independent agent anticipated this. He knows Cover Oregon’s goal was to offer the online option, but at this point he says there’s not another choice.

"Let’s forget the online and let’s go back to the way we did business before, and get you enrolled in Cover Oregon or outside of Cover Oregon, and get that settled sooner than later>

Cover Oregon's target enrollment by December 15th is $200,000 and representatives claim they’ve trained enough extra employees to input those paper enrollment forms so that residents receive coverage on the 1st of January.

Southern Oregon school districts prepare for Common Core Standards

ASHLAND

Ashland Sophomore, Abigail Mizera prides herself on being a good student, but she'll be the first to admit, there's one part of her education she just can't seem to wrap her brain around.

"A lot of times I'll have to re-take a test because I just get so nervous and i'm not a good tester."

Abigail is part of a guinea pig class of Oregon sophomores, the state's first class to take the nation's newest standardized test. They're two, three-hour tests in reading, writing, and math that students can only take one time, and hold a lot of weight when it comes to graduating or not.

"It's kind of really scary."

It's called the Smarter Balanced Assessment. And it's intended to measure how well student's are learning newly adopted common core standards.

The federal government passed the common core initiative in 2007 aiming to promote critical thinking instead of memorization.

Ashland High School Principal, Michelle Zundel says it's a requires a lot from students, and educators.

"We have a significant challenge here and i appreciate the man on the moon challenge what i would really like now is the funding to accomplish it."

Districts in Southern Oregon slowly started implementing common core in 2010. Debbie Connolly, Medford's head of curriculum, says the standards are good.

"Rigor is good we want to hold our kids to high standards we want them to leave the district with the skills they need to be successful in life."

But Connolly says it's been hard to find text books and teaching materials that match the common core standards, and the money isn't there. She says neither are the computers to give the tests that start next spring.

"We physically don't have enough lab space and I know other schools in the country are running up against the same thing."

Principal Zundel says students will need more time and extra more help preparing for the test, which amounts to another cost.

"We've raised the bar significantly higher. We need to lower class sizes, we need to hire more teachers, we need to have a really significant summer school."

Districts are applying for grants, and putting together safety nets for students like Abigail Mizera. Mizera, who's active in theater says she's preparing to have less time for plays, so she can have more time to study.

"I think it's just too much to a have a three hour test to prepare for on top of all other the other things I'm doing my junior year. That's just really really scary."

Police Report: MPD Detective Believes JoCo Commissioner Falsely Reported Car Stolen

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 06:10 PM PDT

Grants Pass

The Department of Justice says there's not enough evidence to charge Josephine County Commissioner Simon Hare with any crime related to what police believe was Hare's false report that someone stole his car back in May. At that time, there were rumors that he may have been driving drunk.

Police reports just obtained by NBC 5 News show witnesses say he was intoxicated the same night his Jeep was allegedly stolen.

Both the Josephine County District Attorney and Commissioner Hare refused to speak with us on camera about the incident.

Witnesses Say Simon Hare Was Intoxicated

According to witness statements in the police reports, Hare was seen inside the Bohemian Bar and Grill and also near the Wonder Bur on the night in question. Witnesses who told police they were with Hare on that night, described him as "drunk."

Paul Peters, a man who said he is a "social acquaintance" of Hare's said at one point in the night people had to convince Hare to find a safe way home.

"Peters said at one point, several people including himself offered to get Hare a taxi or a ride home, as it was clear he shouldn't be driving [...] Peters said several people told Hare to give up his keys or leave them at the bar, but he thought Hare kept the keys."

Simon Hare's Jeep Spotted on Hamilton Ln. at 1:30AM

Later that evening, around 1:30 on the morning of May 10th, in the 1600 block of Hamilton Lane, a resident called police to report suspicious activity.

The woman says she saw someone get out of a parked Jeep. She described him as clean-cut, fit, wearing a dark button down shirt with tan or cream slacks, dark hair and potential facial hair as well, but the woman said she wasn't close enough to make out specific facial features. She said after the man got out of the Jeep, he stumbled around as if intoxicated.

Next, the woman said the man, who looked to be in his 30s, locked the car with an electric key and walked away toward Fruitdale Elementary School. Hare's jeep was found in that location. Authorities noted that when Hare was seen earlier in the evening in downtown Grants Pass, he had also used an electronic key to unlock his car doors.

When they found the Jeep, Police also say there were no indications that it had been broken into. In fact, the investigator said it appeared to be legally parked, was not damaged, and the contents inside were neat and orderly. In addition, authorities said it was suspicious that the Jeep was parked near Hare's home, about half a mile away.

Due to Potential Conflict of Interest, MPD Takes Over Investigation

Medford Police soon took over the investigation due to a potential conflict of interest if authorities in Josephine County continued to work the case. The Medford detective who was investigating the case, Josh Reimer, said Hare was not cooperative. According to Reimer, contact was attempted on several occasions. One morning he even went to Hare's home.

"I asked Simon if I could talk to him for a few minutes and he said he had to get to work. Following my explanation that I just had a few questions and it would only take a 'few minutes' he said, 'I have a very important job and I need to get to it.' I asked if he could call his employer and advise them he may be a few minutes late in order to provide time to talk to me. He was unwilling to call and expressed his lack of appreciation of my visit without an appointment. He said he would call me to set up an appointment several times. I asked Simon Hare, 'Are you refusing to talk to me for two minutes?' He said 'Yes,' and closed his front door."

According to Sergeant Reimer, Hare never followed up like he said he would.

MPD Detective Says Hare Falsely Reported His Jeep Stolen

After speaking with witnesses, Reimer concluded the following:

"The focus of my investigation is to determine whether or not Simon Hare made a false report related to his vehicle being stolen and if not, to identify the suspect that stole the vehicle [...] It is my belief Simon Hare made a false police report in reporting his vehicle stolen."

The case was forwarded to the Department of Justice. Senior Assistant Attorney General Kristen E. Hoffmeyer issued a letter that said there was not sufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges.

Commissioner Simon Hare Speaks Out

Meantime, on the phone, Commissioner Hare acknowledged that he did consume alcohol, however he maintains he was not drunk. He said consuming alcohol is not a crime.

Hare also added that no one actually saw him getting into the car or driving it.

"He [Medford Det. Sgt. Josh Reimer] seemed blatant about the fact that I was guilty but couldn't prove it," said Hare over the phone.

He said from what he understands, the Josephine County District Attorney will not prosecute, so as far as he's concerned, the case is closed. He says he's glad the whole issue is behind him.

MPD Says Case Isn't "Closed"

However, even while the DOJ has dropped the case, officials there say the letter they issued does not preclude other agencies from re-opening the investigation. In fact, Medford Police say they've just "suspended" the investigation. That means if new evidence arises, they can re-open the case. They will have two-years until the Statute of Limitations kicks in; that's when the case will officially be closed for good.

Murder Victim Saves Three Lives Through Organ Donation

18 people in the U.S. die each day while waiting for an organ donation.

A Klamath Falls woman who lost her son to a gunman's bullet finds comfort in her son's decision to become an organ donor, which has saved three lives.

Janice Entriken's son Terry was shot in the head on a rainy Easter evening...but Terry Entriken wasn't pronounced dead until a few days later.

"Terry was kept on life support."  Explains Janice Entriken.  "Until they could get everything situated, that they could do for the harvesting of his organs for donation."

Terry's liver went to a 40 year old restaurant worker.

One of Terry's kidneys went to a retired nurse's aide, and his other kidney went to a retired veteran.

"One organ donor can save up to eight lives."  Notes Clinical Nurse Specialist MaryAnne Keane of Sky Lakes Medical Center.  "One tissue donor can save up to fifty lives."

While 90% of Americans say they support organ donation, less than a third know what steps to take to donate their organs.

Keane points out that Oregonians have two options...

"One, is the D.M.V., which is probably the one most people are familiar with to get that 'D' on your license.  The other is to go directly to the website, register online, at:  www.donatelifenw.org   "

Janice Entriken says she's proud that her son chose to become a donor...

"We're very, very proud that Terry made the decision to help somebody continue their life, because he was so full of life himself."

Entriken adds that she hopes to meet the organ donation recipients someday.

28 year old Leland Thomas Nicholson is accused of shooting and killing Terry Entriken, and is charged with murder.  Nicholson's trial is scheduled for April 14th of 2014.

Record-tying number of
legislators (79) flunk; only 25 score an "A"

Sacramento, CA – HJTA has released its 2013 Legislative Report Card.
HJTA's scorecard is intended as a tool to help struggling California taxpayers

Of the 120 members of the
Legislature, 79 received a grade of "F" while only 25 earned an "A" grade.
Twenty bills were used and represent the priorities of HJTA's 200,000

"Our report card is designed to help Californians gauge how their state
representatives are actually performing on taxpayer-related issues including
tax increases and direct attacks on Proposition 13," said HJTA President Jon
Coupal. "Regrettably, the grades show that Sacramento continues to be very
hostile to taxpayers."

Nine lawmakers received a perfect score:

State Senator
Joel Anderson
(second consecutive perfect score)

State Senator
Ted Gaines
(second consecutive perfect score)

State Senator
Steve Knight
(second consecutive perfect score)

Miners lose volleyball match, win at game of life

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 11:17 PM PDT

Opinion by Ray Wolf

The Yreka Miners volleyball team hosted the Lassen Grizzlies for what more or less amounted to the Northern Athletic League championship match. Lassen won the match 3-2. It was a great athletic competition between two skilled teams. I’d love to write about that, but there was something far more important than the match or game scores–touches. Or more precisely, calling touches.

In the sport of volleyball, one of the harder things for officials to see is when the defense barely touches a ball and it goes out of bounds. In this match, the officials missed at least six of them. But, this isn’t about the officiating. Like I said, it’s one of the hardest things to see. What it is about is sportsmanship and class. Yreka volleyball players coached by Scott Eastman are taught to call their own touches if the officials miss it. In effect, giving the other team a point they otherwise wouldn’t have received. It’s been a trademark of Miner volleyball for as long as Eastman has coached. It has cost the Miners matches and probably did again on Thursday night. Yreka called their own touches three times during the match. Lassen had the opportunity to do the same at least three times in the match. They did not, even though a couple were quite obvious.

Let me be clear. Not calling your own touches is not a rule violation. It is not a requirement to call your own touches. However, it is a significant showing of sportsmanship and class. Yreka was leading the match two games to one, and the score was tied 23-23 in game-four, when a point was awarded to Lassen even though the ball went off a Lassen player. Just about everyone in the building saw the touch except the officials. Earlier in the match, the Miners had called their own touch and the point was switched to Lassen. Lassen had the chance to reciprocate the sportsmanship, but didn’t. Lassen went on to win the fourth game, 25-23, and force a fifth and deciding game.

Yreka again called its own touch in the fifth game. Lassen had two chances to show class and sportsmanship by calling its own touches in the game. They did not, and went on to win the game 17-15 and the match 3-2. And, unless karma catches up with them in their next match against a weak Central Valley team, they will be the outright NAL champs.

I’m not going to lie. I have gone back and forth in my own mind over whether or not calling your own touches is the right thing to do. Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you I’m hyper-competitive.

That competitive side of me says, “Hey, it’s the officials’ job. Let them make the call. They certainly make calls that hurt us.”

But, my thinking, moral and ethical side of me says, “Calling your own touch is the right thing to do. It shows class. It shows sportsmanship.”

In the end, my thinking side wins every time.

I’m not sure it has always been that way. And, I will admit that a lot of my thinking on sportsmanship and ethics has come from being around Scott Eastman the past 10 years or so. It’s not that I totally lacked ethics or sportsmanship prior to meeting Eastman. It’s just that when you are around a person who lives his life that way, and teaches his players the right way to live life and conduct themselves, it tends to reinforce the good side in you.

I can’t tell you how many hours late at night, after matches won and matches lost, Eastman and I have talked on the phone. We talk about teaching student athletes the right things–about teaching them to be winners in life, not just on the court or on the field. We talk about teaching responsibility, honesty, leadership and integrity. And, we even talk about volleyball.

I texted Eastman after the match that I was proud of the way his players conducted themselves.

“Of all the things we want to do as a program, we want to make our community proud,” was Eastman’s reply.

I think that there is little doubt that Yreka is proud of its volleyball team—proud of the young women that represent Yreka High School so well as good citizens and good human beings.

As for the players on Lassen’s team, I can’t hold them responsible for not calling their touches. That’s apparently not what they are taught. I’m sure most, if not all of them, are outstanding kids. And, by the rules of volleyball, they did nothing wrong. It’s a philosophical difference.

In Yreka’s volleyball program, honesty and integrity are exceptionally important. At some other schools, in some other programs and with some other coaches, winning the game or match comes first.

For Lady Miners volleyball, winning at the game of life comes first.

Slide show will be posted on Friday.

It’s a good idea to check with the individual schools to make sure games are still a go…just saying, don’t blame us if you get there and no one else is there. Also, there may be some games not on the schedule because coaches haven’t updated on MaxPreps or haven’t sent SiskiyouYouth.com a schedule.
