Scott Valley Bank at the Avery benefit series presents John Doan – Homage to Fernando Sor on Saturday, Nov. 16

Posted: 05 Nov 2013 07:06 PM PST

Musician extraordinaire, John Doan is returning to the historic Avery Theatre in Etna on November 16, at 7:00 pm to perform his latest concert ‘Homage to Fernando Sor’, which he previewed at concerts in Europe earlier this year. Doan’s deep exploration of Sor’s world has been greatly enhanced by some of the world’s leading scholars who personally guided him through the narrow streets of Barcelona and within the walls of the Monastery of Montserrat where Sor grew up, and among downtown London, Moscow and Paris addresses were Sor lived and worked.

A few years ago Doan acquired an instrument that Fernando Sor very likely commissioned to be built in London in 1819. Hearing Sor’s works on an original instrument added dimension to Doan’s understanding of Sor. Doan also rediscovered Sor’s complete works for the three-necked harpolyre, and presented it in his CD ‘The Lost Music of Fernando Sor’.

In this Concert, Doan not only chronicles the turbulent life and times of the fabled pioneer of the classical guitar Fernando Sor (1778-1839), but transports the audience back in time through his masterful storytelling and multi-media slides. Doan’s bog oak guitar virtually defies time, being the world's only instrument made from 5,500 year old wood! The program includes music on a period Dital harp (ca. 1815) from England and on an authentic lyre guitar (ca. 1815) from France. These instruments are rarely, if ever, heard on the concert stage.

Those of you who have attended Doan’s previous concerts in Etna (‘A Celtic Pilgrimage’ and his ‘Victorian Christmas’ show, which was originally presented on PBS), know the heart-felt performance and incredible music Doan presents in each concert. Don't miss this rare opportunity! Purchasing advance tickets is highly recommended. The Theatre is expected to sell out.

Doan's performance is the third of four 2013 Scott Valley Bank at the Avery performances and will benefit the Scott Valley Family Resource Center (SVFRC). Please bring a non-perishable food item to the performance or drop off at the Etna and Fort Jones branches prior to the November 16 performance to fill the SVFRC pantry.

Advance Tickets are $10, $12 at the door. Purchase advance tickets at Scott Valley Bank, Wildwood Crossing in Etna, and Nature's Kitchen in Yreka. For more information about this performance or to reserve tickets at the door call (530) 467-5815. For more info on the historic Avery Theatre visit scottvalleytheatrecompany.org. Tigers perfect 10-0 in regular season, looking for section title repeat

Posted: 05 Nov 2013 12:44 PM PST

Photos by Chelsea Helms

The Dunsmuir Tigers football team ended the regular season with a 43-0 blowout of the Happy Camp Indians at home on Friday, to go a perfect 10-0 in the regular season, and 6-0 in league. Dunsmuir averaged 51.9 points per game on offense and allowed just 14.1 points per game on defense during the regular season.

The Tigers are seeded number-one in the North and number-one overall for the NSCIF D-VI (8-man) playoffs. Dunsmuir will host the South’s fourth-seeded Mercy Warriors on Friday at Dunsmuir City Park, starting at 6:00 pm.

Mercy (4-6) averaged 24.9 points per game this season, while allowing 33.8 points per game. Mercy’s most significant win was over South 3-seed  Loyalton, 33-26, in late September.

Dunsmuir won the section championship last year in a rematch with Redding Christian, 34-15. Redding Christian put the only blemish on the Tigers 12-1 record during the 2012 regular season, with a 24-16 win in Palo Cedro.

This season, the Tigers hosted Redding Christian (6-1, 9-1) during the regular season, winning 28-20, in what was probably a championship game preview.

In Friday’s win over Happy Camp, Dayton Pepperdine rushed for 215 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. Pepperdine also threw for a TD. Chase Sordahl also had six totes for 142 yards and a TD. CJ Palmer scored a pair of TDs and ran for 101 yards on eight carries. Tommy Stibi had a TD reception.

Defensively, Palmer was a wrecking machine, with 20 total tackles, and 16 solo take downs. Joey Campbell had 16 total tackles, and Pepperdine had 10. Randy Hix picked off a pass and had two sacks. Treyce Ashcraft recovered a fumble.

Final California 8-Man North Standings

Dunsmuir 6-0, 10-0
Redding Christian 6-1, 9-1
Butte Valley 5-2, 7-2
Big Valley 4-3, 6-3
Hayfork 3-4, 6-4
Tulelake 2-5, 3-5
Happy Camp 1-6, 2-8
Elk Creek 0-6, 0-7

Final California 8-Man South Standings

Princeton 5-0, 7-3
Greenville 4-1, 7-3
Loyalton 3-2, 3-7
Mercy 2-3, 4-6
Herlong 1-4, 3-7
