KDRV Posted: 05 Nov 2013 09:30 AM PST Divorce Rate Puts Medford On The Map Posted: 04 Nov 2013 11:41 PM PST MEDFORD, Ore. — Displays at bridal shops greet window shoppers in downtown Medford. A new report suggests couples in Medford are more likely to split after tying the knot than in other cities in the country. Marriage counselors said, in the Rogue Valley, it’s common to see couples who marry young, shortly after high school, have problems just a few years later. “When you don’t really know what you want, you haven’t really seen anybody that’s had a good marriage, it’s pretty hard to hang in there and know what to do,” said marriage and family therapist Barbara Massey The new report ranks Medford fourth in the country for divorces with a 15% divorced population. Marriage therapists think changing climates can lead to depression and possibly causing problems in marriages. “So here we are going right into a season where we have all the fog coming in and that really increases marriage problems when people don't feel as good or happy," said Massey. Divorce attorneys said they have a steady flow of clients, with no particular peak time of year. I would say on average, I probably meet with two to three clients a week that have issues with disillusion or custody,” said attorney Cam Howry Howry said he sees no patterns of any kind and people of all ages and walks of life come through the door. One trend he is seeing more and more is for closures becoming a factor. “And it’s not only an issue from the stand point of there’s no equity in the home, and we’ve got to divide up extra debt, but it’s also an issues in the sense that one or the other spouse is usually going to have to take on the responsibility of what to do with the home,” said Howry. The school district and Medford Education Association have worked through dozens of hours of mediations so far, and are still no closer to reaching an agreement on a contract dispute. Monday night, more than a hundred supporters of the M.E.A. turned out to the school board meeting hoping to support the teachers through presence and public comment. “Do you not understand the price that this has on morale and relationship of teachers and management and for what gain,” one speaker said. After only a handful of speakers, the meeting was interrupted and moved. The official capacity for the room is 80, and with lines out the door the meeting was moved to the auditorium were the crowd was able to fit comfortably and safely. Late Friday, a U.S. District Judge ruled that a six year old ban on selling horses to slaughter houses should be reversed, and at least three U.S. meat processors could begin taking in horses as soon as this week. Several animal rights groups, including the U.S. Humane Society and local horse rescue organization, admit there is a big problem with too many unwanted horses in this country, but they say sending them to the slaughterhouse does not solve the problem. “So, for us, you can start killing off horses in the United States for slaughter, and that will just kind of hide the problem, which is unwanted horses," said Ruth Kennedy, the Equamore Foundation V.P. Kennedy says there are about 150,000 unwanted horses in the United States every year. She says education of horse owners is the solution. Former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is joining with actor Robert Redford to fight the court’s ruling, which rejected a suit by the U.S. Humane Society to block the slaughter of unwanted horses. Ashland Snowfall Encourages Sales Posted: 04 Nov 2013 06:54 PM PST MEDFORD, Ore. — Mount Ashland is now sitting under a few inches of brand new snow, and local ski shops say the winter weather already has customers showing up. This weekend’s snowfall was the 5th for Mount Ashland this season. The Rogue Ski Shop says the first real ski-able snowfall of the season is likely about a month away, but a few early inches gets people spending money on gear and tune-ups. The shop's owner says there are still no signs as far as what kind of ski season it will be, but he’s hoping for something in the middle. "I just always pray for average. So, December 10th, 15th opening. And the other thing I think would be really cool is if things open when kids are out of school," said Rogue Ski Shop co-owner Bob Matthews. Mount Ashland says they’ll be prepared to open right after Thanksgiving if conditions allow. This week they’re laying gravel on the new parking lot expansion, and on Thursday they’ll be hiring seasonal labor for the year. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now | Lack of Low-Income Housing Posted: 04 Nov 2013 06:00 PM PST MEDFORD, Ore. — Low-income residents in the area are having a harder time than ever finding a place to live. The Jackson County Housing Authority says demand for low-income housing is at an all-time high, and many are stuck without a home while they sit on waiting lists. "It could take up to four years for a family to get into a low-income housing complex like this. The Jackson County Housing Authority says they have a waiting list over five thousand people long, the biggest they’ve ever seen, and it’s unlikely to get better anytime soon," said Cara Carter with the Jackson County Housing Authority. According to the Jackson County Housing Authority, high joblessness and low wages have more families than ever seeking affordable housing. They say waiting time is one to two years at best, sometimes double that. Meanwhile subsidies are drying up as well. 150 fewer families are getting rent assistance through the housing authority, about a 7% drop from normal levels. "A lot of people that come see us are couch surfing. They’re staying with families. We see a lot of parents taking their kids back in, parents living with their children because they’re looking for a place as well. A lot of temporary housing situations going on," said Carter. The Housing Authority says the only way they see things getting better is if the economy improves or if more low-income units get built. Neither are likely to happen anytime soon. They say there no clear solutions. The only option for families is to get on as many waiting lists as possible and hope for the best. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now | More Counterfeit Cash Reported Posted: 04 Nov 2013 05:14 PM PST MEDFORD, Ore. — More fake currency is flowing through Southern Oregon compared to last year. Access to sophisticated printers and ink is making it easier for criminals to make counterfeits. Five dollar bills, or any other small bills like 10′s or 20s, are the most common counterfeit bills law enforcement comes across. There are several ways to detect fake money. The easiest way is the way the bill feels. Counterfeit bills are printed on paper, but real currency is on cloth and even has thread weaved into it. Already this year in Medford, police have seen a nearly 51% increase of counterfeit currency. So far this year in Grants Pass, police reported about 144 cases of forgery. They estimate about 60 to 70% of those cases involve counterfeit money. Law enforcement say criminals take the smaller bills, like those 5′s, 10′s, and 20′s, to fast-food restaurants or mini-marts, purchase some items, and then get real cash back. They’ll do this several times in different locations, until they have enough money to purchase drugs. Police find out about this by talking with suspects they arrest. "And also through records that they have on them, or that we recover during the case, and interviews with the people that we are taking into custody, but people associated with them and say, 'yeah we know they were doing this because they bragged about it,'" explained Grants Pass Police Lt. Jim Hamilton. Ultimately, it’s businesses who lose in the end and eat up the costs. Store owners will go to the bank to deposit the cash and not realize the money is fake. Police say there are a few ways to tell if money is fake. On the twenty dollar bill, for example, you should see a watermark of the president's face when you hold it up to the light, or check for a security strip on the side, or see if there’s color-shifting ink; if it has all that, then the bill is real. Jefferson Declaration Posted: 05 Nov 2013 09:19 AM PST Fort Jones Town Council votes to support Siskiyou County Declaration Posted: 04 Nov 2013 11:40 PM PST Tonight, Nov. 4, 2013, all five members of the Fort Jones Town Council, pop. 650, voted in favor of supporting Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors Sept. 3, 2013 approval of the Declaration to withdraw from the State of California. Mark Baird, spokesman for the Jefferson Declaration Committee, explained the grievances of over-regulation and under-representation in the State of California. Each Assemblyman or woman represents over 455,000 citizens and each Senator represents over 900,000 citizens. Baird explained that a return to representation by county would provide the needed common sense for governance in rural counties. Baird said he is receiving comments from a few people that say working for a 51st State is just “too hard.” And Baird responded that he hopes this is not the NEW standard for Americans, because Americans have always been able to do the “hard” things. The earlier part of the Town Council meeting set the perfect scenario for leaving the sinking ship of California and its devastating over-layering of regulations. The town can’t even hire a dog catcher, because of the extensive training and certificates this individual must have; and there are three “vicious” dogs that have threatened children, the Halloween Parade participants, pedestrians and bitten a bicyclist. Red-tape in contracting with the county for animal nuisance problems is even over-whelming. Potential problems with Obamacare may destroy the volunteer fire department and Emergency Safety crew; and the well-functioning sewer pond must now undergo expensive studies to prove it is working correctly. Fort Jones Town Council includes: Mayor Tom McCulley and council men and women: Kate Tasem, Loren Berck, Annie Smith and Don Berry. The room was full with over 30 individuals there to support the Declaration to withdraw from the State of California. | Good for you! | Medford Church Set on Fire in July Gets Ready for Rededication Ceremony Posted: 04 Nov 2013 06:00 PM PST Author: RaeAnn Christensen Taking day by day, and step by step.
"it's just little by little all these things are coming together," says Zion Lutheran Church President John Winkler.
The cross once burned is now getting ready to be replaced, it lays in the front of the chapel.
Winkler says "we are right in the process now of getting the concrete work done around the cross, and then there's a couple benches that will go in and hopefully we'll have gates on the area."
Just months ago, Winkler was standing in his church, shaking his head, trying to grasp what happened.
A burnt cross, charred walls, broken glass, sopping wet floors.
Now, he stands in a much different scene.
"All the three upper parts have been replaced, then the lower parts have been replaced. The support has been....just, I had no idea, that we'd have that kind of support," he says.
The investigation as to who did this has essentially gone cold.
Lt. Mike Budreau of the Medford Police Department says "we've exhausted all of our leads, we've talked with all of our witnesses that we can, at this point we are just waiting for new information to come in so we can maybe get this investigation restarted."
But with the bad, comes the good for this church and it's members.
Winkler says "from a church before, then the fire, then what we will end up with, we'll end up with a nicer facility with what we had, only because we got to redo it." Redone, and almost ready to go.
The church will be having a rededication ceremony within the next 2 to 3 weeks. | Special Report: Social Media, Your Pictures, & Stalkers Part 1 Posted: 04 Nov 2013 05:42 PM PST Author: Kyle Aevermann It's become our way of communication, you're sharing your daily life with friends and family---but that's not all---there are stalkers and thieves also tracking you and you don't even know it. "There are crooks out there who actually target individuals when they are not home maybe go to their home all coming through social media," said former FBI agent Jeff Lanza. We wanted to see just how easy it is to track someone down with a picture they post online. That's where Central Point resident Patricia Heath comes in, who primarily uses Facebook and Google Plus. "It's my way of keeping my family updated on how my life in proceeding and how we are donig and how we are interacting and the different things we do," explained Heath. And like many people, patricia's phone often doubles as her camera. "I'm posting all kinds of pictures. She volunteered based on our Facebook request to check out how easy it is to track through social media. To begin our experiment, we enabled all the GPS features on her phone. The family has been working to change gun laws, so a similar situation won't happen to anyone else. But that has been more of a struggle they had originally thought. "They used to say it takes a community to raise a child and we need the community to help more." For now though the family will have to painfully wait for the closure to this story.
