Siskiyou Youth Sports News Posted: 09 Nov 2013 09:36 AM PST Yreka JV and Frosh football lose to Grizzlies Posted: 09 Nov 2013 09:04 AM PST Most people are honest and ethical. So, I haven’t had to do this before. But, there is a website/facebook page out there that is stealing stories from legitimate media such as SiskiyouYouth, the Siskiyou Daily News and the Mt. Shasta Herald, as well as stealing photos that belong to private individuals. So, I need to make clear that that site and any others that post entire or substantial parts of stories are stealing them. No one has permission to post entire stories, or substantial parts of stories on their website/facebook page. Linking is perfectly fine. And, nothing has changed in SiskiyouYouth’s free photos policy. You can read that at the top right under “Free Photos.” Sorry, I’ve had to add this in, but some people are just scum. Friday night football got off to a rough start for the Yreka Miners, with the frosh losing to the Lassen Grizzlies 33-21 in the first game of the evening. The junior varsity also lost, but in a much more competitive game. Lassen jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter of the JV game, on runs of 52 yards and two yards. Miner Drew Robles scored from five yards out, with 4:17 left in the first half. With a 2-pt conversion, it was 14-8. With 1:45 to go in the half, Juan Cota scored from three yards, tying it 14-14. The 2-pt try failed. Lassen regained the lead, 20-14, with 8:01 to play in the game on a 2-yard run. Two and a half minutes later, Yreka knotted the score at 20-20, when Robles dove into the end zone at the end of a 10-yard run. Lassen won it, 26-20, with 3:00 on the clock via a 15-yard run. The Yreka JVs ended the season with a 6-3-1 record overall. Share on Facebook | 2013 NSCIF volleyball playoff brackets D-IV – D-VI Posted: 08 Nov 2013 11:17 AM PST | Miners volleyball defeats Anderson, finishes 2nd in NAL, will host playoff match Posted: 08 Nov 2013 11:06 AM PST The Yreka Miners defeated the Anderson Cubs, 3-1, on Thursday night, securing 2nd place in the Northern Athletic League and a first round home playoff match. The Miners (21-16) were ranked and seeded 8th in the NSCIF D-IV playoffs. They will host 9th seeded Colusa (11-17) on Tuesday, at 7:00 pm. Yreka trailed Anderson for most of the first game of Thursday’s match. Yreka was down 23-21, when the Miners made their move. Kills by Ashley Ensminger and Courtney Huston tied it at 23-23. A Cubbie boo boo gave Yreka the lead 24-23, and Justine Cota nailed down the win with a kill, 25-23. The Miners jetted out to a 10-3 lead in the second game, and seemed headed towards an easy win. Anderson, however, battled back to tie it at 13-13. Three kills in a row by Cota put Yreka back up 16-13. The Miners went on to win, 25-22. With Jena Turner behind the service line, Yreka went out to an 8-0 lead in the third game. Again, it looked like blowout time. But again, Anderson came back. The difference from the second game was that Anderson came all the way back to win, 27-25. The Cubs, perhaps now feeling that they were Yreka’s equal, put up a battle in game-four. Neither team could go ahead by more than a point, until Yreka went up 15-13, and then 16-13 on a Cota kill. An ace from Turner gave Yreka a five-point advantage, 20-15, and the Miners went on to win 25-18, with Cota’s 22nd kill of the match ending it. Cota’s 22 kills are a career high. She also had 6 blocks. Ensminger notched 13 kills, and had 11 digs. Turner dished out 34 helpers, and Bre Ruelas came up with 22 digs. Final NAL standings Lassen 7-1, 32-6 Yreka 6-2, 21-16 Anderson 4-4, 9-16 Corning 3-5, 11-21 Central Valley 0-8, 1-17 Share on Facebook | Eyes on the Miners with Justine Cota & guests Clayton Bunn and Corina Lange Posted: 08 Nov 2013 09:30 AM PST (Video: Watch this video on the post page) Thanks to: Clayton Bunn and Corina Lange for taking the time to do the interview. Medford Oregon | KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2 Posted: 09 Nov 2013 09:10 AM PST Debate Over Salvaged Timber In Oregon Continues Posted: 08 Nov 2013 06:11 PM PST Over the summer 5 major wildfires in southern Oregon burnt a little more than 98,500 acres. And what to do with the burnt timber has been a hot topic. "Science is telling us very clearly that post fire habit, espicailly the the heavily burnt areas is some of the best wildlife activity in our forests," said Chad Hanson, an ecologist. That's the view of nearly 250 scientists who recently co-wrote a letter to members of congress explaining why burnt timber must stay in place. "It's a very rich and colorful ecosystem if it's left alone, and the most destrictive thing that could be done in this sensitive and rich habitat is post fire logging" But that's not the way Jackson County Commissioners see it. NBC 5 news obtained a letter written by the commissioners last month showing support to lawmakers to salvage the burnt timber. The county is already down nearly 24 million dollars because of cuts to O&C lands this year. And while Hanson acknowledges the economic impact salvaging the timber would do, he says in the long run it's not a good idea. If you would like to read each of these letters, you can click the links below. Letter from scientists: http://www.geosinstitute.org/images/stories/pdfs/Publications/Fire/Scientist_Letter_Postfire_2013.pdf Letter from commissioners; Link to come. | Residents voice concerns over fee increases Posted: 08 Nov 2013 04:59 PM PST Author: Jennifer Elliott Medford 38 million dollars...That's how much the City of Medford is spending on police and fire projects... as well as new ball fields at U.S. Cellular Park. The recent council meeting is bringing up concerns for residents, many of whom didn't even know about the resulting fee increases. If you're a Medford resident, come January 15th the public safety fee in your utility bill will go up 2 dollars a month. The money goes to rebuild the police station and rehabilitate 3 fire stations. Medford resident Miles Newman just wishes he could have voted on it...."Things that involve millions of dollars should really be voted on by the people," says Newman. That's not all: The city also approved 6 million dollars for the U.S. Cellular Park for 3 new ball fields and parking. To do that they raised car rental fees from 5 to 12.5%. "It could be well intentioned, but it could be abused at the same time," comments Newman. "Also if it's well intentioned there's no reason it shouldn't be voted on."
It's legal..the city can raise fees without voter approval except... "Property taxes are the fee that is the required vote of the public," explains City Finance Director Alison Chan. While the city continues moving money, in light of county problems, like library funding-- which is in need of 5 million dollars plus, resident Christian Farkas wonders if spending 6 million for ball fields is the best option, "It's an ok idea, but I would take the money and spend it somewhere else." For instance, though it's not the norm, the City of Ashland uses property taxes to support it's library. But Medford Parks and Recreation says U.S. Cellular Park's completion will draw more people to the Medford area, thus helping the local economy. Council members we spoke with on the phone say the public safety increases are a necessity. The city says they did hold public hearings where residents could speak up about these fees... if you'd like your voice heard on future issues: the city council meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. They start at noon and again at 7 in the evening. The agenda is posted online.
Jefferson Declaration Posted: 09 Nov 2013 09:06 AM PST Another grievance: The State’s lawyers continue delay tactics Posted: 08 Nov 2013 10:57 AM PST Today (November 7, 2013) the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association filed its brief opposing the State's latest Demurrer in the fire fee litigation. If you are a regular reader of these updates, then you know that HJTA filed a class action lawsuit against the State of California to challenge the State's new "fire prevention fee." The suit, on behalf of over 825,000 Californians subject to the new fee, argues that the $150/year "fee" is really an unconstitutional tax. It asks the court to invalidate the fee and order refunds to everyone who has paid it. Rather than responding to our concerns, the State continues to file "Demurrers," which are legal arguments that the lawsuit isn't allowed. Click here to receive a full briefing on the lawsuit's current status. A hearing on the State's latest Demurrer is scheduled for: Date: November 21, 2013 Time: 9:00 a.m. Location: Department 14 of the Sacramento Superior Court, 720 Ninth Street, Sacramento. The hearing is open to the public. If you plan to attend, please arrive early, dress appropriately, be quiet and respectful in the courtroom, and turn your cell phone off. If you have a "Burned by the Fire Tax" tee shirt, feel free to wear it. If you want a tee shirt, you may send a check for $15 plus $5 shipping and handling to HJTA at 921 11th Street, Suite 1201, Sacramento, CA 95814. Those who attend the hearing can receive a free tee shirt by stopping by the HJTA office prior to the hearing. Remember, a lawsuit is a slow process, and full resolution through the courts of appeal will likely take years. However, we are making important progress in our fight to protect the rights of taxpayers against this unfair fire tax. A passionate crowd of more than 100 packed into the campus gym to hear a panel talk about separating from the state of California. Among the speakers were Redding City Council members, Patrick Jones and Gary Cadd. The two were the only council members to vote in favor of supporting a State of Jefferson movement when the council turned down support (3-2) at a meeting last month. Also on the panel was a 23-year-old named Kayla Brown. Brown told attendees the first course of action to secede is to get support from the Shasta County Board of Supervisors. “We’ve actually been talking with Shasta Supervisors and we have two in our corner right now. We’re still talking to the other three, but really right now we just need to show that we have the support of people from Shasta County as well as business support. This isn’t a sprint. This is a marathon. We need to show we have support of everyone here and that’s what we’re doing,” said Brown.
